The Mayor’s Office Internship Program provides a unique opportunity to gain experience and develop the capacity to solve New York City’s most pressing issues. The mission of the Mayor’s Office Internship Program is to build a diverse pipeline of future public service leaders. This highly selective group of professionals collaborate with staff to better the Office of the Mayor and New York City.

Opportunities

Internships are available for High School, Undergraduate, Graduate, and Law students. All Office of the Mayor Internship Program positions are paid.

Selected Interns will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience working on Mayoral and NYC agencies initiatives, projects, tasks, processes and/or procedures. The internship will provide students with exposure to city government, workplace skills development and networking opportunities.

A limited number of positions are available for current high school and matriculated college and university students.

Job Description

The Academic Advising Center provides academic information and centralized advising services to all undergraduate students through the clarification of degree requirements and academic program. The Center makes information available to students that will provide a clear understanding of the academic requirements that impact their selection of programs and courses with the goal of leading to timely receipt of the baccalaureate degree. To achieve this, the Center provides advising and registration to all new students – freshmen and transfers – by working closely with the First Year Experience Program to place freshmen into classes reserved for first-year students and with academic departments to facilitate entry into the major for transfers. The Academic Advising Center is often the first point of contact for new students after admission to Queens College.

Duties

 Advise students about academic regulations and degree requirements with primary focus on College’s general education.

  • Serve as the dedicated liaison to the Navitas program (a global higher education organization partnered with Queens College to increase international student access to higher education to prepare them for future success), cohorts include the Global Student General Admissions (GSGA) and Global Student Success Program (GSSP).
  • Advise and register incoming GSGA students during New Student Advising by way of group and/or individual freshman advising sessions.
  • Facilitate Freshman Advising Workshop and Welcome virtually or in-person (when applicable).
  • Manage freshman holds and student groups for Freshman Sessions to ensure mandatory advisement and proper student records; includes coordination with campus support services as applicable.
  • Dedicated advisor to Navitas students’ post-admissions throughout their academic journey to ensure successful degree progression and completion; this includes course selection, development of academic plans based on class standing and levels of preparedness.
  • Outreach to Navitas students via QC Navigate (campaigns and targeted communications) for timely advisement and registration.
  • Assess and revise new student onboarding each cycle based on surveys, self-studies, advisor feedback, etc.
  • Manage related statistics/analyses by use of spreadsheets and data.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Baccalaureate degree required.
  • International student experience preferred.
  • Applicant should be friendly and personable, possess excellent communication skills, exercise strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Must be able to work independently, as well as part of a team with a collaborative approach to problem solving.
  • Ability to maintain high levels of self-motivation, creativity, and initiative.
  • Microsoft Office experience and some knowledge of PeopleSoft and Hobsons preferred. Ability to learn new technologies.

Compensation: The rate is $18 per hour plus benefits. 20 hours per week required with the expectation of a flexible schedule.

The Office of Labor Policy and Standards (“OLPS”), which provides workers in New York City a voice in City government, is responsible for enforcing the city’s municipal labor laws such as the Earned Safe and Sick Time Act, the Grocery Worker Retention Act, and the Fair Workweek Laws, including recently-passed “just cause” legislation that protects fast food workers against unlawful termination. OLPS conducts outreach and public education efforts to vulnerable workers, and research and data analysis to recommend efforts to achieve workplace equity for women, communities of color, immigrants, refugees, and other vulnerable workers. The Division of Paid Care within OLPS also assists workers with submitting complaints regarding federal, state, and local labor and employment law violations and helps OLPS coordinate with other government agencies, worker advocacy groups, as well as community, labor, and employment organizations.

OLPS is seeking an Intake Specialist to receive and respond to inquiries from members of the public about the laws OLPS enforces, screen employee complaints, and maintain records of intakes received.

This position reports to a Supervising Investigator and key responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining strong familiarity with OLPS’ published legal interpretation guidance and referral information;
  • Responding to inquiries from members of the public by telephone and email;
  • Initial screening of complaints received, identifying complaints that may fall within OLPS’ jurisdiction, and making appropriate referrals for workplace issues outside of OLPS’ jurisdiction;
  • Data entry in the OLPS case management database to track intakes received; recording information necessary to open an investigation or court navigation matter;
  • Review of Consent Orders to input compliance terms in DCWP’s adjudications database; recording proof of payments made by employers to employees in compliance with the terms of Consent Orders;
  • Performing research to support investigations using public sources, law enforcement databases, and other investigative tools; and
  • Providing support to other OLPS programs as needed.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

  1. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and two years of full-time, satisfactory experience conducting investigations or inspections for a commercial, industrial, governmental or law enforcement employer; or
  2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college; or
  3. A satisfactory combination of education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1” above. College education may be substituted for the required experience on the basis of 60 semester credits for each year of required experience. However, all candidates must have a four-year high diploma or its educational equivalent.

License Requirement

Possession of a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York at the time of appointment. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.

Director of International Advocacy

The Worker Rights Consortium (WRC) is hiring for the position of Director of International Advocacy.

Key Responsibilities 

The Director of International Advocacy will spearhead multiple strategic initiatives designed to achieve systemic reform in the garment industry, working with partner organizations to press global brands and retailers to make binding labor rights commitments and then honor those commitments. Examples of such initiatives in recent years include creating and expanding the Accord on Building and Fire Safety in Bangladesh (now known as the International Safety Accord) and pressing brands and retailers to sign binding agreements with unions to address gender-based violence and harassment. The Director of International Advocacy will also lead efforts to help workers win remedies for labor rights violations at individual factories. The person in this position will also participate in the development of organizational strategy. 

This is a new director-level position; the exact job title may be adjusted. 

Areas of responsibility include: 

  • Creating strategic plans for and leading the execution of organizational initiatives; 
  • Coordinating with international partners and representing the WRC with partners and networks; 
  • Coordinating field and desk research among WRC staff and with partner organizations as part of advancing these strategic initiatives; 
  • Engaging with brands and retailers to secure remedies for labor rights abuses;  
  • Writing and editing reports, memos, and other  documents; 
  • Communications work, including presenting information to the press and assisting reporters with facts and information; and  
  • Generating public materials and social media content. 

The Director of International Advocacy would also be asked to participate in other aspects of organizational operations, such as preparing for meetings of our Board of Directors and University Caucus.  

There is a preference for applicants based in the Washington, DC, area. As part of our Covid-19 precautions, all WRC employees are currently working remotely and not engaging in travel. As the situation improves, the position may require some travel. 

Qualifications   

Candidates must have: 

  • Seven or more years of experience working on workers’ rights or human rights issues, including experience engaging multinational corporations and experience in leadership roles within organizations or coalitions;  
  • A demonstrated commitment to workers’ rights; 
  • Experience working effectively in coalition and successfully navigating partnerships with a broad array of organizations;   
  • Experience managing multiple projects and ability to coordinate with diverse partners;  
  • Superior writing, communication, and organizational skills; and 
  • Experience engaging journalists strongly preferred. 

Compensation 

The salary range for this position is $78,000–100,000, depending on relevant experience. The WRC provides an excellent benefits package, including 100% employer-paid family health insurance, including dental and vision care, with an additional flexible spending plan with employer contribution; 401(k) retirement plan with employer contribution; and five weeks paid vacation. This position is covered by a union contract.

Director of Development & Strategic Partnerships

The Worker Rights Consortium is hiring a Director of Development and Strategic Partnerships. This person will lead the WRC’s fundraising operations to maintain and grow our budget, currently over $2.5 million annually, including working with foundations, individual donors, current and potential university affiliates, and other funding sources.

We seek talented, creative, and energetic candidates who have either a strong record of achievement as a fundraiser or a similarly strong record of achievement in other areas of public interest work, such as communications, advocacy, or organizing. Our ideal candidate is passionate about the fundraising that makes our work possible.

This person will lead the WRC’s overall fundraising operation, at the level of both strategy and implementation.

Areas of responsibility include:

  • Maintaining existing relationships with foundation funders;
  • Securing new institutional funders;
  • Monitoring progress on grant work through regular communication with program staff;
  • Leading outreach to secure new university affiliates and engagement with existing university affiliates;
  • Maintaining and expanding the WRC’s individual donor program;
  • Supporting the WRC’s external communications strategy, including through the development of promotional materials;
  • Working with partner organizations to pursue joint funding opportunities and to coordinate work on related projects;
  • Maintaining records related to foundations, grants, and individual donors;
  • Managing budget allocations, tracking spending, and conducting financial reporting across multiple grants;
  • Contributing to financial planning and oversight; and
  • Participating in the development of broader organizational strategy.

The WRC office is located in Washington, DC, but all staff members are currently working remotely due to the Covid-19 pandemic. There is a strong preference for candidates who will be able to work from the DC office once our team returns to the office.

This position will report to the Executive Director.

Qualifications

Candidates must have:

  • A minimum five years of relevant experience in fundraising for nonprofit organizations and/or progressive causes or campaigns or a combination of fundraising work and other relevant work experience, such as communications, advocacy, or organizing work;
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills, including the ability to write grant proposals, as well as promotional and explanatory material geared to specific constituencies, and the ability to represent the organization in funder meetings and other venues;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to maintain working relationships with people from diverse backgrounds;
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills and rigorous attention to detail;
  • Ability to maintain high standards of ethics, integrity, and professionalism;
  • Energy, enthusiasm, and a strong work ethic; and
  • A commitment to workers’ rights.

The following are desirable but not required:

  • Proven track record cultivating, soliciting, and maintaining relationships with various donor constituencies;
  • Experience with organizational financial management; and
  • Experience with labor rights work, domestically or internationally.
