Center for Innovation in Worker Organization (CIWO) seeks a part time Program Manager

About Us
Always Essential is a national campaign to supercharge the power of the “essential work”  narrative to transform what’s possible for essential workers, particularly those in low-wage sectors who are disproportionately Black, and other workers of color.

Winning  includes raising standards in key sectors; improving safety; and  increasing worker  power in the workplace. For the first time in a long time, because of the COVID-19 crisis, low wage workers in  essential industries are being recognized and have the support of  most  Americans. We believe this is a once in several generations opportunity to address the chronic undervaluing and insecurity of  low-wage work in America.

The Fellowship will be coordinated by United for Respect and the Center for Innovation in  Worker Organization (CIWO). CIWO is a “think and do tank” launched in 2014 and housed at  Rutgers  University’s School of Management and Labor Relations. CIWO is a space where labor and community connect; where leaders and staff at all levels in the economic justice movement can refine their skills and develop new ones; and where innovative new research, ideas, and strategies are cultivated.

Partners in this effort include Jobs with Justice, National Domestic Workers Alliance, Bargaining for the Common Good, Justice for Migrant Women, as well as a growing list of local and national organizations.

About the position
CIWO is looking for a consultant to serve as a part time Program Manager to co-develop and manage the next cohort of the Always Essential Fellowship program. This fellowship will bring together frontline leaders of the essential worker community across sectors and geographies to connect with one another, learn critical  organizing & campaign building strategies, and develop their own leadership.

We are looking for an experienced organizer and campaigner who is highly independent, able to collaboratively manage a team remotely, and has the drive to take initiative. Because our Fellows are assigned to various aspects of the Always Essential coalition work and are positioned across organizations and geographies, we seek someone who can successfully drive and manage deep partnerships with the organizations that make up Always Essential.

Most importantly, the Program Manager will help build connections by leading with compassion and understanding while also curating an environment and culture that nurtures and develops leaders through quality rigorous personal development.

This position will begin in May 2022 to ensure adequate planning and outreach time before the 6-month fellowship begins in August 2022. The position will continue through February 2023 so the Program manager can complete a final analysis of the success and learnings from the 2022 fellowship.

Key Responsibilities include:
● Working jointly with the CIWO to ensure the overall success of the Always Essential Fellowship (timeline, structure, recruitment, collaborative decision making, etc.);
● Co-leading a design team of staff, consultants, and worker leaders to structure and implement the 2022 fellowship;
● Mindfully co-building a cohort of worker leaders from the Always Essential coalition to ensure that the fellowship both supports campaign work and is the next step in the individual’s leadership development
● Supervising the day-to-day administrative and programmatic support of the Program Associate and Program Coordinators from United for Respect and CIWO. Examples of administrative and programmatic support needs include: contracting and managing
interpretation services for curriculum and training materials, ensuring that all expenditures are aligned with the program budget, working with the Program Associate to ensure that classes are run smoothly, managing all subgrants provided to the host organizations, and more.
● Collaborating in the design, curriculum development, and co-facilitation of the core training framework with a group of staff, workers, and facilitators.
● Co-developing Fellow’s peer-to-peer trainers on topics such as health and safety, corporate decision making, and racial and gender justice.
● In partnership with curriculum leads, providing on-going debrief and evaluation of curriculum, upcoming sessions, and trainers.
● Co-developing a final analysis of the success and learnings from the 2022 fellowship
● Additional responsibilities as needed.

Qualifications:
● At least 7 years of relevant experience in the labor movement, progressive organization, or political campaign
● Experience in training and facilitation in regards to worker organizing, racial justice, and equity, and professional development
● Demonstrated knowledge of project management skills
● Ability to work on tight timelines with internal and external partners
● Extensive knowledge in building deep connections and relationships with members and organizational leaders
● Demonstrated experience seamlessly managing and developing staff from our diverse membership base
● Ability to prioritize among competing priorities and multi-task across a broad spectrum of collaborators to meet deadlines
● Previous experience managing a team collaboratively is a must
● Extensive experience in leadership development and demonstrated understanding of  issues working people face in the world day-to-day
● Excellent written and verbal communication skills with sharp attention to detail and  process and willingness to give (and receive) feedback constructively
● Proven track record of winning concrete community advocacy or policy campaigns as well as coordinating and mobilizing large numbers of people into action
● Knowledge in budget management

Compensation & Consultant Terms:
This is a 10-month consultant position starting in May 2022 through February 2023 with an  opportunity for renewal based on additional funding. Compensation is up to $60,000 with no benefits provided.
