ImPACCt Brooklyn Seeks Community Organizer – Section 8

ImPACCt Brooklyn is a not-for-profit, membership-based community development corporation entering its fifth decade. We combine tenant and community organizing,tenant and homeowner services, affordable housing development and management, and economic development to improve the Central Brooklyn communities.

The Section 8 Community Organizer works with our team on housing and tenant rights campaigns with a particular focus on organizing tenants in distressed and overleveraged HUD Project Based Section 8 buildings and other buildings as necessary, developing leaders to work on the preservation of Section 8 Housing. Other tasks include one on one tenant counseling, leadership development and base-building, as well as maintaining a property database. The organizer will work within existing coalitions and with the ImPACCt Brooklyn Leadership Group. The Community Organizer will report to the Director of Organizing.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Organize tenant associations to advocate for, preserve and protect tenants in HUD Project-based Section 8 buildings which are facing foreclosure or expiring HAP contracts
  • Work with a network of residents and active tenant associations to preserve affordable housing
  • Collaborate with other local and city-wide organizations to advocate for solutions to the loss of affordable housing
  • Create written materials and flyers for the organizing departments
  • Maintain a database of Section 8 buildings in our service area
  • Prepare written reports as required
  • Oversee volunteers

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum of 2 years organizing experience, experience with media campaigns a plus
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Computer literate
  • Ability to relate to and motivate people from diverse backgrounds
  • Commitment to social change and community empowerment
  • Willingness to work evenings and some weekend hours
  • Bachelors Degree preferred
  • Spanish strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with Brooklyn and/or housing issues preferred

Policy Coordinator Position:

The Policy Coordinator is a critical member of the Policy Team, which is focused on improving and enforcing the law to reduce poverty and promote social justice. The Policy Coordinator should be passionate about Empire Justice Center’s mission, work well as a member of a team, be enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the policy process. They must have the ability to juggle multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced environment and have excellent communications skills.

The Policy Coordinator is responsible for working with the Policy Team to support the development of the organization’s annual policy agenda, in consultation with Empire Justice Center attorneys and advocates. The Coordinator is also responsible for working with the Team to implement the agenda through: participation in and coordination of organizational, coalition, and government meetings; the creation of materials, action alerts, social and other communication and media strategies. Materials may include, but are not limited to: researching and writing policy reports, testimony, legislative memoranda, regulatory comments, letters to the editor, op-eds, blog posts and social media posts.

The Policy Coordinator will work as part of the Policy Team to coordinate and track all policy related work of the organization at all levels of government, ensuring consistent positions and branding on issues, internal information sharing, reporting and strategizing, and helping shape and consistently improve internal systems.

The Coordinator will also work to advance the organization’s policy positions in the broader community by educating organizations, policy makers and other stakeholders about Empire Justice Center’s overall mission as an organization. This may include representing Empire Justice Center in coalition meetings, public presentations and media opportunities as the need arises.

The Coordinator will become a participating member of the Marketing and Communications Team and help maintain the organization’s vast online policy presence, including any social media programs, by identifying and creating content, updating posted materials, using analytics across multiple digital platforms to track and grow efficacy.

The Position

This position is based in Albany and reports to the Vice President for Policy and Government Relations, who is also based in our Albany office.

Qualifications

  • Education: at least 3 years of New York State policy experience, BA and/or Masters in relevant field.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Mastery of Microsoft Office 2010, especially Outlook, and familiarity with Adobe.
  • Familiarity with current and emerging social media and other digital platforms.

Citizens Budget Commission Seeks Economic Development & Housing Policy Associate

The Citizens Budget Commission is a nonpartisan, nonprofit watchdog group dedicated to improving the finances and services of New York City and New York State government. We provide analysis and comment on the budgets of the State, City, and public authorities like the MTA and Port Authority. We also produce policy reports to inform the public about state and local government, advance ideas for solving policy problems innovatively, and engage elected officials to serve the public interest.

We seek a policy associate to join an experienced and growing policy team to analyze economic development and/or housing policy proposals, respond to media requests, and author evidence-based research publications.

Most successful candidates work well under minimal supervision and will have at least 3 years of professional experience; a masters degree in public policy, public administration, economics, political science, or related fields; familiarity with New York State and local government; experience using New York State, New York City, and federal data sources; and excellent oral and written communications skills.

Financial modeling and statistical skills are a plus.

Center of Economic Opportunity Seeks Special Projects Coordinator

The Center of Economic Opportunity (CEO) is searching for a Special Projects Coordinator who has familiarity with program management, research and public policy related to poverty and disparities, and issues facing young people of color. The Special Projects Coordinator will coordinate the design, implementation, program management, and related policy initiatives for multiple initiatives and projects and will:

• Manage new initiatives that are part of the Young Men’s Initiative and the Children’s Cabinet and other new special projects as necessary. Programs areas will likely include areas of education, mentoring, and community innovation.

• Coordinate with City Government partners including the YMI team, and the staff of the Children’s Cabinet to ensure programs and policies are implemented.

• Work with City agencies – particularly the NYC Department of Education and the City University of New York – to develop and implement program implementation work plans and budgets and data collection and performance management strategies in alignment with CEO’s existing practices and systems.

• Provide ongoing feedback to City agency partners on performance data and fiscal management, and manage evaluations of new projects in coordination with CEO’s Director of Programs and Evaluation.

• Generate summary reports and develop written products on program operations, results and related topics.

• Research best practices and develop standards and criteria for expected program outcomes.

• Work to develop new programs and policy initiatives, and to identify and pursue funding opportunities for the expansion of CEO and YMI programs.

• Engage agency partners and external audiences including policymakers through meetings, conference presentations and helping to organize CEO and YMI events.

• Supervise staff and tasks assigned to others.

• Execute special projects as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or

2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or

3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1” or “2” above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in “1” above.

Preferred Skills

• Experience with project management, research, and anti-poverty policies.
