The Council of State Governments Justice Center (CSG Justice Center) is a national nonprofit organization that provides practical, nonpartisan advice and evidence-based, consensus-driven strategies evidence, to increase public safety and strengthen communities. The CSG Justice Center works closely with legislative leaders, judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, victim advocates, and others to develop consensus on often highly politicized criminal justice issues and to translate this consensus into comprehensive reports, policy briefs, state and federal legislation, model policies, and innovative programs. The CSG Justice Center not only develops written and web-based materials, but also provides on-the-ground technical assistance to policymakers and practitioners from multiple systems (corrections, behavioral health, housing, etc.) in state and local jurisdictions.

JOB SUMMARY

Working as part of the Justice Center’s Behavioral Health Division and reporting directly to the Program Director for Corrections & Reentry initiatives, the Policy Analyst will be responsible for providing technical assistance and managing projects to enhance collaboration between other criminal justice agencies, and behavioral health agencies; analyzing relevant, administrative policy, research, and legislation; coordinating a team of expert consultants providing on-site, intensive technical assistance; developing administrative policy options; and coordinating and participating in politically sensitive meetings with high-ranking local, state, and federal officials, advocates, and other experts across the country. This position offers a significant level of responsibility and opportunity for growth to an individual seeking to advance a career in criminal justice policy.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Specific responsibilities of the Policy Analyst include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Participating in technical assistance delivery, initially by supporting senior staff and/or consultants in coordinating, attending, and documenting site visits in jurisdictions across the country and eventually by leading technical assistance site visits;
  • Developing written products, including policy briefs, research memos, and presentations that concisely and clearly describe complex analyses and policy options to policymakers;
  • Collaborating with senior staff to develop long range strategies to guide the Justice Center’s Corrections & Reentry work;
  • Working with wide range of stakeholders focused on city/county government, , criminal justice technical assistance efforts;
  • Monitoring timelines, budgets, and deliverables to ensure that responsibilities to funders are met in assigned project areas;
  • Researching new funding opportunities and contributing to writing grant proposals;
  • Contributing to the development of Justice Center website content and strategizing with staff and technical consultants on ways of using the web to promote policy goals;
  • Planning and participating in policy-focused meetings of government officials, advocates, and national experts;
  • Identifying and engaging new contacts in the field to serve as formal or informal project consultants or partners;
  • Ensuring that senior staff and, where applicable, Justice Center colleagues, consultants, or funders are aware of relevant project developments and that other work in the field is leveraged for the advancement of project goals;
  • Supervising program assistants and associates where appropriate;
  • Participating actively in staff discussions and strategic planning meetings.

SKILLS & ABILITIES

Excellent research, writing, and editing skills and an analytical mind;

Experience with performance measurement, research/evaluation, and data analysis;

Demonstrated knowledge of Corrections & Reentry and criminal justice policy;

Demonstrated experience in policy formulation, analysis, advocacy, research or the like;

Strong oral communication skills, including the ability to effectively distill and present complex information in a concise, accessible way;

Excellent interpersonal skills, including maturity, an ability to work independently and in a team setting, and a sense of humor;

Efficient, organized work style, and an ability to prioritize quickly and confidently and manage multiple deadlines;

Willingness to travel, occasionally several times per month.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

At least four years of work experience in the fields of corrections & reentry, local government, criminal justice, justice and/or local policy analysis; some preference for experience working with city or county policymakers.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

A college degree (required) and a graduate degree in a related field, such as law, criminal justice, or public policy (preferred).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS ESSENTIAL TO PERFORM THE DUTIES OF THE JOB

Frequently communicates with internal and external coworkers and customers;

Frequently views the computer to create policy briefs, memos, and presentations;

(S.A.V. E) Stand Against Violence East Harlem is a community based organizations that utilizes community members known as credible messengers to implement a “Stop the Shooting” campaign. S.A.V. E coordinates events and resources to address and reduce the shootings in East Harlem. We provide resources, services and referrals to high risk individuals ages 16-24. Outreach Workers will be trained and are a key ingredient to the success of this initiative.

S. A. V. E Outreach Worker will help stop shootings by doing all that is required individually and as a team to prevent shootings in East Harlem, including: 1. Getting to know all the highest risk persons and the people who know them 2. Working to gain trust of the community and highest risk persons so they know you are there – to help prevent shootings and violence, and help with resources, services and referrals to change the negative mind-set of high risk individuals. 3. Communicate to the public that S.A.V. E is in the community to help stop shootings and provide resources by assisting and promoting community mobilization when shootings or other violent incidents occur. 4. Distribute (Public Education) material about the S.A.V. E program to educate the community about S.A.V. E services, developing strategies to be better informed of possible retaliation of a shooting. 5. Outreach Worker will have a caseload of at least 15 participants.

Other Duties: · Case Management skills (preferred) · Conduct outreach to the community (individually and as a team member) to build strong relationships with youth, residents, businesses, and East Harlem community groups/stakeholders. · Serve as linkages and support for individuals to enhance their assistance and use of opportunities and programs in the community (e.g., job programs, GED, drug treatment, and mentoring) · Advocate for youth through court testimonies, when necessary · Participate, as necessary, in organizing responses to shootings and increasing visibility when shootings/killings take place· . Identify and diffuse “hot spots” for shootings and violence· . Document detailed client case notes

S. A. V. E Outreach Worker must have: · Experience working with At-risk/High risk Youth and Gang Members · No pending criminal cases or prior convictions for sexual assault, child abuse or domestic violence · Excellent communication skills · Experience or training in crisis intervention · Knowledge of East Harlem Neighborhoods · Valid NYS driver license, insurance, and good driving record a plus · A demonstrated ability to develop useful community relationships

Friends of Island Academy Seeks Director of Community Partnerships

Organization Description

Friends of Island Academy (Friends) was founded in 1990 to anchor, support and develop capacity among young people newly released from jail in New York City. A pioneer in adolescent reentry services, Friends builds on connections developed with young people while in custody, and leverages those relationships to provide post-release, neighborhood-based supportive services. Young people become members of Friends and develop personal milestones and goals in the arenas of health and well-being, education, employment, youth leadership and community participation.

Position Background and Description

The Youth Reentry Network (The Network) is a newly created Demonstration Project developed in collaboration with the New York City Department of Correction and other public and private partners to launch, pilot, implement and evaluate the impact of an innovative system of case expediting, pre-release planning and neighborhood-based aftercare and support for the youngest people admitted to and released from DOC custody in New York City.

New York City is rich in organizations and programs, large and small, serving young people at risk of further criminal justice involvement, City-wide. The Network will include multiple private and public partners, and it will be guided by a City-wide Steering Committee and four working committees designed to inform, facilitate and promote the development of the Network and ultimately to institutionalize it as part of the justice system in New York City for the youngest people in NYC DOC custody. The Director of Community Partnerships will be a key member of the leadership team assembled to launch and implement the Youth Reentry Network and support its development.

Essential Responsibilities:

Collaborate with the Youth Reentry Network leadership team to launch start-up, implementation, and operations in the communities to which young people return post-release

Nurture and promote City-wide partnerships to forge pathways for youths’ connection to relevant post-release supports

  • Establish formal subcontracted services as well as informal partnerships with existing youth services and opportunities, cultivating and leveraging resources to make them available to young people upon release;
  • Facilitate collaboration by multiple public and private stakeholders to meet the goals of this Network;
  • Provide leadership that supports collaboration, teamwork and mutual support and promotes a culture of organizational excellence, continuous program improvement and fidelity to our model and to the people and communities we serve;

Establish and navigate a comprehensive system of aftercare/post-release supports for the youngest people leaving DOC custody

  • Ensure that City-wide, neighborhood-based services and resources are available within targeted communities;
  • Reach out to organizations throughout New York City to build connections and opportunities for young people leaving custody;
  • Work closely with the Director of Transitional Services and the Youth Advocacy teams to facilitate connections between Youth Advocates and neighborhood-based supports;
  • Participate actively in the New York Reentry Education Network and other community coalitions that support youth returning from custody;
  • Conduct ongoing asset mapping project with community engagement staff, youth leaders, and interns in order to identify the resources available to young people throughout the five boroughs.

Develop and maintain a comprehensive system of reporting and data collection to evaluate the effectiveness of the Network

  • Prepare regular internal reports showing numbers of youth referred, number actually connected, and length of engagement;
  • Prepare monthly reports for funders;
  • Conduct appropriate interventions to address any performance issues;
  • Work with the Network leadership team and DOC partners to build and maintain a strong Steering Committee for the Network and provide guidance for Working Committees.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Advanced Degree in relevant field (Social Work, Public Administration) or commensurate experience;
  • Minimum of five years’ experience in juvenile/criminal justice/youth servicing organizations or agencies with minimum two years supervisory experience;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, cultural competence, and an understanding of and belief in strengths-based youth development philosophy.

Preferred:

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and other business software;
  • Experience with databases and report development;
  • Experience/training in youth development and facilitation;
  • Experience in program start-up and/or working at Rikers and/or a secure setting;
  • Bilingual skills preferred.

Position Overview

NYRP’s Director of Community Engagement will engage neighborhood stakeholders, residents, NYRP community gardeners and partners to strengthen the impact of NYRP’s restoration work in community gardens and open spaces in underserved communities of NYC as guided by the objectives of NYRP’s strategic plan.

Principal Duties

  • Under general supervision, with latitude for independent initiative, assist the Senior VP and Chief Operating Officer with the planning and implementation of citywide engagement strategy to increase community stewardship and use of public open space in under-resourced neighborhoods;
  • Design and lead community engagement services, experiences and initiatives;
  • Expand dialogue with schools, NYCHA sites, and other community based organizations within the geographic proximity of NYRP sites to build capacity for garden care and programming;
  • Manage asset mapping, community surveys, and other ways for communicating with, and receiving feedback from, neighborhood residents to better understand community interests and identify resources within NYRP focus regions;
  • Supervise department staff, track stakeholders, coordinate field coverage and facilitate staff meetings;
  • Communicate interdepartmentally in support of fundraising, communication, and programmatic initiatives to successfully integrate community engagement practices;
  • Assist in the development and management of a departmental annual budget.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and 4 or more years of community organizing or other related experience;
  • Proven relational, leadership and organizing skills;
  • Success at managing a wide array of tasks and projects and an ability to thrive in a fast-paced work environment;
  • Confident communicator, strong presentation skills both in person and in writing (fluency in Spanish is strongly preferred);
  • Supervisory experience;
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and independently;
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint;
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including occasional evenings and weekends;
