Solidarity Center seeks a Project Director in Mexico to head up an initiative that will help workers realize and exercise their rights under landmark labor law reforms enacted in 2017 and 2019. Priority sectors for this project include aerospace, mining, steel, aluminum, industrial bakeries, electronics, and/or call centers.
The Project Director will be responsible for strategic planning, program coordination, reporting, and executing partnership agreements and subgrants related to this project. Extensive travel within Mexico will be required once conditions allow. This position will report to the Country Program Director, who oversees Solidarity Center’s broader Mexico portfolio, and will collaborate with stakeholders in Mexico and Washington to keep them updated on project activities and progress.
As the point person for this initiative, the Project Director will be responsible for monitoring performance indicators, tracking spending, collecting information from partners for reporting, drafting reports to the donor, and developing project-related documents in coordination with the Washington, DC-based program officer. This individual will lead the project team to ensure that Solidarity Center meets anticipated goals within budget targets while remaining compliant with U.S. Department of Labor (USDOL) grant regulations, Solidarity Center policies, and pertinent host country laws.
Qualifications:
This position requires strong project management skills and the ability to monitor budgets and outcomes and write results-oriented reports. Knowledge of and/or experience with U.S. government funded projects is required. This position demands sound judgment, a head for analysis, and keen political sense. Experience with worker organizing and/or worker issue advocacy in Mexico is a priority. A deep understanding of worker rights issues in supply chains, including worker rights violations particular to women, such as Gender Based Violence (GBV), is important.
Additional requirements include:
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience in project management, supervision, administration, and implementation of cooperative agreement and/or contract requirements
- Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines, achieve project targets, establish and maintain systems for managing project operations, and oversee the preparation and submission of required reports to donor agencies.
- Proven success serving in a leadership role for a project addressing labor issues, specifically the free exercise of worker rights.
- Experience establishing and maintaining systems to manage project operations.
- Clear and thorough understanding of USDOL policies, procedures, and requirements
- Knowledge of international relations and trade union and socio-economic and political developments in the U.S. and abroad.
- Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree, or law or Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree reflecting expertise in areas relevant to this project, such as labor law, public policy, sociology, and project management.
- Previous trade union experience.
- Computer literacy for word processing and simple spreadsheets.
- Excellent writing and communications skills in the English language; and
- Oral and written fluency in both English and Spanish.
