the Workers Justice Project (WJP) seeks Donor Relations Associate

Overview

Worker’s Justice Project (WJP) was founded in 2010 to address the racial and economic injustices that low-wage immigrant workers face in New York City by building collective power to win institutional change. WJP, a fiscally sponsored project of TSNE (tsne.org), runs two long-standing worker’s centers in Brooklyn. We promote justice and opportunity for low-wage immigrant workers in New York City by pushing for systematic enforcement and expansion of workplace protections, which include labor and occupational health and safety standards while advocating for industry-specific efforts to improve working conditions. WJP also offers skills-building training to workers in health & safety and industry-specific areas, and we educate immigrant communities about their rights in the workplace and how to exercise those rights.

Responsibilities

The Donor Relations Associate will play a key role in creating and fostering a culture of philanthropy within Worker’s Justice Project. They will report to the Director of Development and Programs and will support all aspects of development work including project managing special events, coordinating communications with donors, maintaining and managing the donor database, and providing administrative support to reach fundraising goals. They will be a key contributor in developing fundraising events and campaigns.

The Donor Relations Associate is required to occasionally work some early mornings, evenings and weekends. The work performed is deemed Essential. The Donor Relations Associate is responsible for ensuring that activities are conducted professionally, in a culturally sensitive manner, and in alignment with the organizational mission. Compliance with WJP, NY state and NY city COVID-19 safety protocols and requirements is mandatory.

Essential Job Functions

Donor Data Management and Fundraising

  • Works closely with the Development Director in developing fundraising events and donation campaigns;
  • Draft donor communications including acknowledgements, thank you letters, and other correspondence;
  • Generate mailing lists for year-end mailing, spring mailing, annual report mailings, and events;
  • Ensure donation receipts and thank you letters are sent promptly and according to policy;
  • Follow up on donor communications;
  • Provide administrative support to the Development Director.

Fundraising Operations

  • Maintain fundraising events calendar;
  • Maintain donors’ information in the database;
  • Generate reports to track trends and giving histories of members.

Event Coordination

  • Manage and coordinate logistics for in-person and online events;
  • Work collaboratively on events with staff to achieve event fundraising goals;
  • Coordinate and deliver donor-centered communications for events and appeals;
  • Draft and distribute electronic and hard copy acknowledgments and post-event thank yous;
  • Manage event invites, RSVP lists and ticket tables;.
  • Research and contact potential event sponsors.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least two years of development or related experience;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, customer service, project management, organizational skills and attention to detail;
  • The ability to establish positive relationships with a variety of people in multicultural environments;
  • A proven track record working on development events with diverse budgets;
  • Experience managing and tracking annual donor benefit fulfillment and a desire to create new mission-driven donor experiences;
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google;
  • Knowledge of customer relationship management systems (CRM);
  • Ability to meet deadlines and goals while working under pressure;
  • Willingness and ability to occasionally work extended hours, including evenings and weekends and travel throughout New York City;
  • Strong knowledge of Mailchimp and Canva, preferred.

Compensation and Benefits

Location: Work will be hybrid. Remotely for the day-to-day activities and travel throughout NYC, WJP locations, and surrounding areas, when needed. This is a full-time (37.5 hours/week); non-exempt position. The position will require working some early mornings, evenings, and/or weekends as needed and will travel periodically once COVID-19 restricted are lifted.

The NewsGuild of New York seeks a Contract Campaign Lead

Contract Campaign Lead 

The NewsGuild of New York, an affiliate of the Communications Workers of America (CWA) and a dynamic, member-led union, seeks a highly experienced and motivated campaign lead to work on a strategic contract campaign.

The ideal candidate will have at least three years experience prepping and training workers to have hard one-on-one conversations to move their coworkers to escalating actions, up to and including supermajority strikes. The position will report to The NewsGuild of New York Field Director and be accountable to other staff on the campaign. You must be a self-starter with the ability to receive ongoing feedback and direction. This position requires long and varied hours, including some nights and weekends. The position is based in New York. Staff are currently working remotely due to the pandemic, but will eventually be expected to report to our office in midtown Manhattan.

Job qualifications:

  • Minimum three years experience running large campaigns against tough employers
  • Experience building robust Steward networks
  • Ability to do deep organizing with members, including regular one-on-ones, list work, role plays, and other skills building
  • Skilled in developing the organizing skills of worker leaders to plan escalating actions, training members in organizing conversations and running Contract Action Teams
  • Experience facing well-run consultant campaigns
  • Deep familiarity with private sector bargaining law and strategy
  • Ability to relate, establish and cultivate meaningful relationships with members and to mobilize them to act
  • Demonstrated success in providing direction and organizing training to member leaders
  • The ability to write organizing plans
  • Knowledge and experience using digital tools to organize workers across large distances

Responsibilities:

  • Ongoing coaching of member organizers who are doing the work of moving their coworkers to participate in the campaign and take collective action to win their contract
  • Help to plan, organize, provide guidance and help to coordinate multiple ongoing union committees, including leading, assigning, motivating and training members
  • Develop an escalating contract campaign culminating in a supermajority strike
  • Work with communications staff and consultants to support the messaging and communications plans for the campaign

Compensation:

Salary starts at $85,000, commensurate with experience. Union-represented position, covered by the Local Representatives Guild.

NYC Comptroller’s Office seeks a Public Safety & Criminal Justice Organizer

Public Affairs Bureau Overview

The Bureau of Public Affairs is the principal liaison between the Comptroller’s office and the public, mayoral agencies, and federal, state and local authorities. The Bureau provides community organizing, outreach and event planning capacity for the Comptroller’s strategic initiatives, and manages the Community Action Center, which provides assistance to New Yorkers with complaints about inadequate and/or ineffective programs and services.

Public Affairs is responsible for creating participatory structures for aspects of the Comptroller’s work, in addition to collaboration with internal and external stakeholders to support advocacy and legislative campaigns aimed at winning change that matters to New Yorkers across a number of issues.

Job Description – Strategic Organizer for Community Safety & Restorative Justice

The Strategic Organizer for Community Safety & Restorative Justice will lead engagement between the Comptroller’s Office and  advocacy groups, issue-focused coalitions and campaigns, and various community stakeholders across the five boroughs on issues of safety & justice. This position will sit in the Public Affairs bureau and report to the Director of Organizing.

The successful candidate will collaborate with policy, communications and other internal teams, as well as external partners, to create and drive organizing strategies that harness the resources of the Comptroller’s office to provide leadership and/or support to change making, issue-focused campaigns. This will include leveraging the case-making capacity of empirical policy/budget/economic analyses produced by the office, as well as organizing and participating in direct actions with stakeholders. 

Core Duties:

  • Create and execute a comprehensive engagement plan to establish the Comptroller’s Office as a trusted partner on issues of safety & justice; including legislative and communications strategy (in collaboration with the broader Public Affairs, Policy & Communications teams).
  • Build & manage relationships with key external partners to identify opportunities to collaborate; including elected officials, community based organizations & advocacy groups.
  • Organize an ongoing series of public events to maintain collaborative dialogue with a wide array of stakeholders across the city on issues of safety & justice.
  • Identify issues and campaigns for the office to weigh in on; support communications team on rapid response & proactive messaging.

Who We’re Looking For:

The ideal candidate is a strong communicator, analytical thinker and coalition builder with skills/experience in community organizing and prior experience with anti-violence, substance use prevention, mental health services, and/or restorative justice work. 

The following skills are preferred, though not required: Specialized knowledge and experience in legislative, public policy, or issue advocacy work experience in the broad spaces of public safety and restorative justice; strong relationships with advocacy organizations in those spaces; familiarity with City, State and Federal legislative processes.

Duties and responsibilities include:

• Perform economic, financial, and labor cost analysis for contract negotiations

• Public speaking and/or teaching experience

Through the collective voice of its 18,000 members, the Directors Guild of America works to establish, enhance, and protect its members’ economic and creative rights, and strengthen their ability to develop successful and meaningful careers. US Department of Labor announces plans to hire 100 investigators to support its Wage and Hour Division’s compliance efforts

Division seeks to build out enforcement team nationwide

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Labor today announced that its Wage and Hour Division is seeking to add 100 investigators to its team to support its enforcement efforts including the protection of workers’ wages, migrant and seasonal workers, rights to family and medical leave and prevailing wage requirements for workers on federal contracts.

The Wage and Hour Division is one of the nation’s most essential labor law enforcement agencies, responsible for enforcing some of the most comprehensive labor laws affecting more than 148 million workers. The cornerstone of its enforcement team, investigators’ responsibilities include the following:

  • Conducting investigations to determine if employers are paying workers and affording them their rights as the law requires.
  • Helping ensure that law-abiding employers are not undercut by employers who violate the law.
  • Promoting compliance through outreach and public education initiatives.
  • Supporting efforts to combat worker retaliation and worker misclassification as independent contractors.

“Adding 100 investigators to our team is an important step in the right direction,” said Acting Wage and Hour Administrator Jessica Looman. “We anticipate significantly more hiring activity later in fiscal year 2022. While appropriations will determine our course of action, we are optimistic we will be able to bring new talented professionals onboard to expand our diverse team.”

In fiscal year 2021, the Wage and Hour Division collected $230 million in wages owed to 190,000 workers. Division representatives also conducted 4,700 outreach events to educate employers and workers alike about their workplace rights and responsibilities.
