Intern, Seeds of Peace (NYC)

Seeds of Peace is a non-profit, non-political organization dedicated to empowering teenagers from regions of conflict with the leadership skills required to advance reconciliation and coexistence. Our network now encompasses 7,021 alumni throughout the Middle East, South Asia, Europe, and the United States who are uniquely positioned to lead change. We are currently seeking interns to join the team in our New York City office, conveniently located near Grand Central Station, for the upcoming Fall semester period which will run from September through December. This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to broadly learn about the operations of a global non-profit organization, develop their professional skills and networks, and gain exposure to an office environment. This is an unpaid internship, but we provide a stipend for meals and transportation. We will have both full-time and part-time positions available as described below.

Position Descriptions (Full-time and Part-time)

Programs Intern

The work of the Seeds of Peace Programs Department is dedicated to seeing young people from areas of conflict grow into the courageous, empathetic leaders of tomorrow, and we’re looking for an intern who shares our passion for making opportunities that unite, inspire, and transform. This role will offer also offer the opportunity to work specifically on our preparation for events, outreach and recruitment for programming both abroad and in the United States, and research on possible programming sources such as lectures, museum exhibits, and workshops.  The position focuses on administration and planning, giving insight to what it takes to bring ideas for great programming into reality. Exceptional computer skills, including Microsoft Office, and attention to detail are essential. Applicants must have excellent writing and oral communication skills and be very organized and independent workers. Applicants with prior administrative and research experience, as well as an interest in transforming conflict in the U.S. and abroad, are preferred.

Development (Fundraising and Outreach) Intern

As the Development Intern, you’ll work closely with development professionals with more than a century of combined experience in event planning and development for nonprofits. Your duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Database Management: Detailed, accurate recordkeeping is essential to the success and organization of any development department. Learn the ins and outs of our Raiser’s Edge database and assists the Database Manager with entering new records from various sources and updating existing ones. Additionally, helps with organizing and managing mailings to various constituencies.
  • Donor events: Provides administrative support for all development events, such as communications with invitees, managing lists, data entry, organizing reservations, vendor payments, and checking-in guests the night of the event.
  • Stewardship and cultivation: Assists staff in cultivating new and existing donor prospects and partnerships, including online research, follow-up/thank you phone calls, and letter-writing.

Communications Intern

The Communications Intern supports the Communications team with a range of tasks that may include, transcribing interviews, creating short videos, curating photos, writing blog posts, proofreading documents, research, and some basic design work. The Intern will gain experience in digital marketing and content creation, as well as improve his/her communications writing skills. Requirements: self-motivated, organized, and excellent writing and communications skills. Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop, video editing, and/or InDesign is a plus. General understanding of WordPress and some HTML is also preferred.

Finance Intern

Finance Interns will perform a number of tasks related to bookkeeping and accounting. They will learn how to use the Financial Edge software and will enter financial data including vendor invoices and journal entries. Furthermore, finance interns will work with various types of spreadsheets, learn to do invoice coding, budgeting and schedule reconciliation. Daily tasks will include cash deposit and credit card donations processing, filing of paperwork and more.

Administration and Human Resources Intern

The Administration and Human Resources

The Administration and Human Resources Intern performs daily tasks such as answering phones, drafting correspondence, compiling information through research projects, keeping calendars and contact lists updated, etc. He/she assists the Administrative Coordinator and Director of People Operations with HR tasks such as updating various databases, interview scheduling, applicant correspondence, performing reference and background checks, preparing materials for orientation, conducting orientation, preparing all new hire paperwork, advertising all open job positions, creating new personnel files, and maintaining compliance with all Federal and State Laws. This position may assist with and other special long-term projects. He/she supports certain facets of camp hiring and programming as well as provides administrative support in the various departments as needed. This may include dealing with insurance forms and vendors, compiling materials for staff, donors, or board members, keeping the office organized and machines working, etc. Interns will also be responsible for various financial duties, including filling out check requests and maintaining organization with monthly business credit card statements.

Seeds of Peace Internship Requirements

Must be current college/graduate student.

Experience working in an office environment is preferred.

Basic computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office applications such as Word, PowerPoint and Excel are essential.

Applicants must have excellent writing and oral communication skills, pay good attention to detail, be very organized, and able to work both independently as well as part of a team.

Knowledge of the Middle East/ South Asia preferred, Hebrew, Arabic, Urdu or Hindi a plus.

Applicants who wish to receive academic credit for this internship must make arrangements with their schools. Seeds of Peace is not responsible for acquiring college credit for interns.
