Director of Internal Organizing

Based in Braintree, MA

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

SEIU Local 888, a statewide union of public service workers uniting more than 8,500 members in Massachusetts is looking for a committed person to lead our Internal Organizing team.

The Director of Internal Organizing provides day-to-day supervision of Local 888’s Internal Organizers; performs representational work in key chapters as needed; trouble shoots difficult issues and advises and supports Internal Organizers with their work.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Transform Local 888 from a “service union model” to a “member-led organizing model” that builds hundreds of worker leaders and a militant, worker-run, rank-and-file union
  • Work with field staff and chapter leaders on the transformation of their roles and responsibilities in an open shop environment
  • Develop strategies that build members’ power to set standards for their industry or job title
  • Work with field staff and chapter leaders to achieve contract “hallmarks” (i.e. new member orientation, union leave, electronic records etc.) established by Local 888’s Executive Board
  • Oversee member-led contract campaigns and coordinate with other Local 888 departments (membership services, politics, organizing, and admin) for effective campaigns
  • Work with legal department and field staff as needed on matters of contract interpretation, identifying merits of potential arbitration cases and unfair labor practice claims
  • Provide day-to-day supervision of field staff; authorizing expenses and reviewing personnel decisions
  • Ensure that field staff are developing leadership structures that are self-sustaining within chapters
  • Lead or assist with contract negotiations, ensure that field staff are working with diverse and representative member-led negotiating committees
  • Lead members into struggle so they learn firsthand the power of collective action

Key Qualifications

  • Minimum of five years prior experience in the labor movement
  • Contract negotiation experience required
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and experience required
  • Prior supervisory and training experience required

Working Conditions

  • May be required to work long and irregular hours, at times work on weekends and holidays and to travel as needed.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable functioning automobile.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Field Representative is an internal organizer responsible for engaging and mobilizing members and development of leadership in SEIU 888 chapter. This position reports to the Director of Field Representative. This includes attending to the needs of Local 888 members and providing these services in an effective and efficient and friendly manner will ensure that inquiries are dealt within established time limits.

DUTIES &RESPONSIBILITIES

Contract Knowledge & Negotiating Skills

  • Ability to understand contract language and its relationship to existing laws
  • Ability to identify Unfair Labor Practices
  • Demonstrated ability to write and propose new contract language
  • Develop strategies for contract campaigns
  • Coordinate bargaining with others and prioritize effectively
  • Properly train and develop bargaining teams
  • Integrate MOA(s) into final contracts timely and accurately

Grievance Handling

  • Ability to effectively explain the difference between a gripe and a grievance to members,
  • Ensure all deadlines are met
  • Regularly review, manage, and track grievances to help deliver quick results
  • Investigate grievances thoroughly
  • Request relevant information early
  • Interview and prepare potential witnesses
  • Prepare and present cases effectively at all at grievance steps prior to arbitration
  • Engage in settlement/resolution discussions within appropriate timeframe
  • Communicate effectively with the grievant and chapter leader throughout the grievance process
  • Work toward having member leaders take the lead role in all grievance steps prior to arbitration through coaching and training

Compensation
This is a bargaining unit positon covered by the agreement between SEIU Local 888 and the Union Field Staff Union. Salary placement commensurate with experience. Benefit package pursuant to union contract.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Database Coordinator reports to the Director of Finance and HR and is responsible for assisting with administrative and clerical services, pertaining to the maintenance of membership data. Scanning checks and rosters for uploading into membership database. This includes attending to the needs of Local 888 members, and staff, while also dealing with inquiries on the phone and face to face in the union hall. Provide services in an effective, efficient and friendly manner. Ensure that inquiries are dealt within established time limits.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Maintain Membership Data

  • Data entry
  • Run reports from membership data program
  • Assist the Accounts Receivable Coordinator
  • Work in Excel to convert file types to desired format for uploading into membership data program
  • Send public information requests to employers, help with tracking responses, and work with Director of Finance and HR on any refusals to comply
  • Assist with compiling data for per capita reporting
  • Assist with dues entries into membership program
  • Assist with scanning of checks to bank as needed
  • Assist with membership drop protocols and escalate issues to Director of Membership Engagement

Maintain Office Records

  • Assist with membership information management, obtaining authorization cards in electronic and print formats, filing authorization cards and purging of obsolete records according to the retention schedules
  • Scanning various office documents
  • Ensure security and confidentiality of data

Maintain Office

  • Assist with maintaining a clean and professional environment for members, staff and visitors
  • Assist with scheduling and preparing conference rooms for meetings
  • Assist with updating and securing sign in sheets

Maintain Office Services

  • Assist with receptionist duties, answer phones and manage main line voice mail system
  • Assist in overseeing all incoming and outgoing correspondence and distribution
  • Assist in maintaining and monitoring office supplies inventory

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
