Broome Street Academy Seeks Work Based Learning Coordinator (NYC)

Overview

The Door is an unparalleled model for youth development, offering a comprehensive range of integrated services within a single site for nearly 10,000 New York City youth each year. Our mission is to empower young adults to reach their full potential by providing comprehensive youth development services in a diverse and caring environment. At The Door, youth can access health care and education, mental health counseling and crisis assistance, legal assistance, college preparation services, career development, housing supports, arts, sports and recreational activities, and nutritious meals – all for free and under one roof. By providing participants with our suite of integrated services, we seek to provide any motivated young person with the tools, resources, and opportunities needed to successfully transition to adulthood.

Responsibilities
  • Assist the Head of School in defining needs, developing plans, establishing goals, and formulating policies and procedures for career readiness program development
  • Assist with career development of students through career clusters, extended learning opportunities, and employability skills
  • Recruit new businesses and organizations to provide quality work-based and school based learning opportunities for students
  • Maintain lists of businesses/industries willing to participate in work-based learning; collaborate and liaise with The Door for opportunities
  • Prepare, review, and edit written materials as needed for correspondence, brochures, and agendas
  • Maintain an inventory of supplies and materials to support the Work-Based Learning program
  • Maintain and offer professional development by participating in national and state organizations/associations, and attending conferences related to work-based learning
  • Host a Spring “Career Fair” which allows community partners to come and meet with students
  • Work with all BSA and Door staff to provide instruction in: employability skills, Resume writing and interviewing skills
  • Assist in screening, interviewing, and selecting qualified students for work-based learning experiences
  • Coordinate Cooperative Education, Internships, Job Shadowing, Service Learning, and other Work-Based Learning programs offered through The Door that relate to worksite learning
  • Contact business and industry in regards to their employment and training needs and to encourage partnerships with Broome Street Academy
  • Disseminate information on Work-Based Learning programs to employers, parents, teachers, students, and staff
  • Assist with curriculum development and integration of technical and academic education
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, Sociology, Urban Policy, Education or related field strongly preferred  or extensive related professional experience
  • 3 – 5 years of experience in a professional or educational setting
  • Knowledge of work-based learning initiatives to include career counseling
  • Two years of experience in youth development, preferably employment, career oriented programs and/or youth development programs required
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply positive youth development principles to working with young people
  • Prior experience in working with vulnerable youth populations (foster care, court involved, runaway and homeless or teen parent, etc.)
  • Prior experience creating and facilitating work-based learning workshops and trainings
  • Demonstrated understanding and practice of the principles of positive youth development
  • Ability to model work readiness skills and appropriate work place behavior at all times along with demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment
  • Demonstrated team player who is comfortable with ambiguity, flexible, collaborative, easy going and has a sense of humor
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Experience in establishing industry and community partnerships
  • Experience in creating work-based learning opportunities for students
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other experienced professionals, teachers, parents, students and other stakeholders
  • Strong computer and technology skills; proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Proficiency in Spanish, French, or Mandarin preferred
