New York Civil Liberties Union Seeks Organizer – Lower Hudson Valley Chapter

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

The NYCLU seeks to fill the position of full-time Organizer for the Lower Hudson Valley Chapter office in White Plains. This position reports to the Assistant Advocacy Director (Director of Organizing) and works in close collaboration with the Chapter Director.

The NYCLU’s Advocacy Department develops campaigns to advance and defend civil rights and civil liberties across the state. The Department is comprised of 7 chapter offices, 5 organizers, 3 policy counsels and an assistant.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist in conceptualization and undertake implementation of campaigns to advance and defend civil liberties and civil rights;
  • Engage in a wide array of tactics, including lobbying, coalition building and organizing to mobilize NYCLU members and supporters on a wide range of civil rights and liberties issues;
  • Develop and steward strong relationships with key allies including social justice organizations, service providers, educational institutions, organized labor, faith groups, and lawmakers;
  • Train, engage and mobilize a grassroots network of members, supporters and volunteers;
  • Organize and conduct public education events, presentations, workshops and panel discussions;
  • Engage in direct lobbying of public officials;
  • Identify opportunities to develop strategic partnerships with community groups to advance the NYCLU’s advocacy agenda;
  • Respond to requests for support and information from community members including requests for legal assistance;
  • Develop policy expertise on NYCLU issues;
  • Other related duties as assigned.

 IDEAL CANDIDATE:

 The ideal candidate for this position will have a strong understanding of the NYCLU’s mission and a demonstrated commitment to civil rights; will have organizing experience, including leadership development and base building; will have experience developing or implementing policy and/or legislative advocacy campaigns; and will have experience working on racial justice and immigration issues.

Minimum Qualifications Required to Apply for the Position:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and one or more years of experience in organizing, advocacy, and/or related fields;
  • Demonstrated commitment to civil rights and civil liberties, and understanding of the mission of the NYCLU;
  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and proven ability to effectively interact with a diverse population;
  • Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple projects simultaneously;
  • Proficiency with MS Office programs;
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license and registered vehicle;
  • Ability to regularly travel within the Lower Hudson Valley Chapter’s seven county region, and to Albany and NYC headquarters office as needed;
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.

 PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Spanish language skills;
  • Master’s degree and/or 3 or more years of relevant experience;
  • Familiarity with the Lower Hudson Valley region or ties to the area a plus;
  • Experience organizing around policing, and/or immigrants’ rights.
