32BJ Seeks Partnership Campaigns & Member Engagement Coordinator (New York City)

The Coordinator will develop, build and manage relationships with partner organizations and community groups that expand the capacity of 32BJ’s organizing program, help to win progressive legislative and policy campaigns, and support low wage worker campaigns. A significant focus in 2016 will be working with environmental and environmental justice organizations. The Coordinator will also work with members and retirees in supporting member led retiree clubs, neighborhood clubs as well as build and manage a member benefits program. The Coordinator reports to the Director of Strategic Partnerships.

SEIU 32BJ represents 145,000 property service workers in 11 east coast states and the District of Columbia. 32BJ has an aggressive organizing program aimed at raising standards for security officers, airport workers, cleaners, residential maintenance workers and institutional food service workers. 32BJ also has active political, legislative and electoral campaigns to support the organizing, social, economic and climate justice policy initiatives. 32BJ has a very diverse membership and its members speak many languages.

The position is based at the New York City headquarters, but the Coordinator will be expected to be available for some travel and an occasional extended assignment throughout 32BJ’s geography

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Working with Partners & Allies. Represent 32BJ with coalition partners and allies in a way that provides constructive and strategic leadership including work with individual partners as well as in issue-based coalitions. Accurately understand and report back coalition dynamics.
  • Developing member leaders & activists. Provide support, assistance and training for member leaders and activists in 32BJ clubs and committees and members active with partner organizations. Work with union staff to identify member activists.
  • Staffing and developing 32BJ retiree program. Provide support, assistance and training for member and retired member leaders and activists to build a retiree program. Work with communications staff to develop a program to increase retiree activity and membership in the union.
  • Leading the development of a member benefits program. Develop and administer a program of benefits, discounts and services for active and retired members including working with the SEIU retiree and member benefits program staff.
  • Contributing to 32BJ’s overall program. Work in support of 32BJ’s overall program on projects and/or campaigns.

Qualifications include:

  • Five years’ experience in community and/or labor organizing and/or campaign work
  • Demonstrated leadership skills
  • Effective judgment in handling relationships with other organizations and their leadership; ability to recognize and appropriately report and manage occasionally politically sensitive situations
  • Experience in member or staff leadership development; experience in training/facilitation a plus
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Ability to build strong working relationships with stakeholders inside and outside the union
  • Multi-cultural competency and ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and literacy levels
  • Fluency in English and Spanish
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends and, on occasion, holidays
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office, Outlook, and simple databases
