SumOfUs Seeks Campaigner/Senior Campaigner, based in the US

SumOfUs is expanding our US Campaigns team. If you’ve got an itch to tell the story of corporate power run amok, ideas about how to take on multinational corporations with $2500 and a gorilla suit, and you’re hungry to experiment with new technology to create and scale campaigns for the 21st century, then this is the role for you.

Who we are

We are SumOfUs: a global team of 30 campaigners, technologists, media-fanatics, data-geeks, and strategists. We’re passionate, low-ego, and fun to work with. We’re always looking for new ways of doing things, and we embrace professional and organizational growth.

We work with on the ground activists and organizers to hold the biggest corporations in the world (and their political allies) to account by mobilizing millions of people to take collective action.

What you’ll do as part of our team

  • Identify, research and develop campaigns targeting corporations around the world;
  • Write and set up action email alerts to engage and mobilize our members with strategic actions and a compelling narrative of corporate power;
  • Coordinate with partners in the US and globally;
  • Develop and implement strategic tactics to win campaigns and build our movement;
  • Support our campaigners team and work with contractors, including project management; and
  • Other roles, as needed (we’re still a start up environment!).

Skills and experiences you’ll need to bring

We have no formal education requirements – if you take on the role and are willing to grow with it, that’s all that matters.

All campaigns roles at SumOfUs require you to be:

  • Comfortable in fast-moving work environments;
  • Dedicated to building a fairer and more sustainable global economy;
  • An excellent writer and communicator;
  • An enthusiastic technologist and experimenter;
  • Committed to ensuring a diverse and progressive workplace culture.

And, this role in particular will require you to be:

  • Passionate for and skilled in the MoveOn/Credo/ColorOfChange/350.org model of digital campaigning;
  • A talented networker and relationship builder;
  • Familiar with the US political context and progressive campaigning and social movements; and
  • Based in the US.

Other skills that would be nice to have

We know that no one can possibly have all all these skills – you will likely bring 2 or 3 of the following to our team:

  • Proficiency in major world languages other than English — especially Spanish;
  • Experience managing a large email list (100,000+ subscribers);
  • Experience with online fundraising;
  • From or experience working closely with communities affected by corporate power — from indigenous communities to low-wage workers;
  • Experience working in low-wage jobs, from big box retailers to national restaurant chains to manufacturers;
  • Knowledge of and relationships with policy experts and campaigning groups in key issue areas like privacy, tax justice, the global financial system, workers rights, and food issues;
  • Experience with market campaigns or corporate accountability issues;
  • Extensive network of community organizations, non-profits, workers centers, unions and advocacy groups and a political understanding of key world regions — especially Western Europe, United States, Canada, and/or Latin America;
  • Experience working with mobile technology and user interfaces;
  • Experience using SQL and data and experimentation tools (e.g. Optimizely), ideally in a campaigning environment.

How to apply

We don’t find cover letters particularly helpful. Instead, use the form here to upload your resume and a PDF document with your answers to the following four questions:

  • Why are you applying for this job? (suggested word limit: 125);
  • Name two campaigns you think SumOfUs should be running (suggested word limit: 125 words each). One campaign should be something you think is going to engage all of our members around the world, and one campaign should be something you think will engage our members in the US. Make sure to include the target of the campaigns and the “ask”. For inspiration, check out recent examples of our work on the campaigns section of our website.
  • Name one technology you would like to experiment with using in your campaign work, and explain why (suggested word limit: 125).
  • List which of the “nice to have” skills above you have, with a few words of explanation if that’s useful.

Applications will be open until 4pm US Eastern on Sunday, February 14. However, you are strongly encouraged to apply as soon as possible, and we will be reviewing and processing applications on a rolling basis from January 31 onwards.

And, remember, we’re looking for great writers–so use your responses to demonstrate your writing skills. If you have questions about this or other jobs or have a technical problem, please feel free to email us at jobs@sumofus.org.
