Basil Smikle on MSNBC

Basil Smikle Jr. has been an Adjunct Professor at the Murphy Institute for over six years, teaching classes under the umbrella of Urban Studies in the Public Administration Certificate in Policy Analysis and Government, Politics and the Policy-Making Process.

This weekend, he appeared on MSNBC to discuss the Democratic party and the 2016 Presidential Election.

Labor and the People’s Climate March

Murphy faculty, staff and students were among the over-310,000 people who participated in the People’s Climate March on September 21. Labor unions first gathered for a rally at 57th Street and Broadway before the march began, and union leaders and members spoke about the importance of the march and the issue of climate change.

Many union members were impacted directly or indirectly by Superstorm Sandy, and they are eager for the city to make necessary changes to prevent future storms from having a catastrophic impact. Continue reading Labor and the People’s Climate March

MinKwon Center for Community Action Seeks Civic Engagement Associate

The MinKwon Center for Community Action invites applications for a Civic Engagement Associate. The Civic Engagement Associate would work in the Korean American, Asian American and immigrant communities as part of the Civic Engagement Team to grow an informed, active base of community members who are fully engaged in the electoral process and in advocacy campaigns on issues such as comprehensive immigration reform, fairer allocation of city and state budgets, and tenants’ rights.  This is a full-time position.

CHHAYA CDC Seeks Neighborhood Planning and Policy Manager

Chhaya CDC is seeking a dynamic Neighborhood Planning and Policy Manager to join its leadership team. The primary responsibility will be to lead the BASE Campaign (Basement Apartments Safe for everyone) – including coalition building, education of constituents, partners and policy allies, media as well as implementation of communications strategies, and work with elected officials and publicagencies to inform policy development. The Manager will work closely with the senior leadership and organizing team to implement advocacy priorities. In addition, the Manager will represent the organization in key housing coalitions focused on policy initiatives critical to Chhaya’s primary constituents.

Northwest Bronx Community and Clergy Coalition Hiring Community Organizer/Housing

The NWBCCC is a 40-year old broad-based social justice community organization that unites individuals and institutions to fight for better neighborhoods and for social, economic, environmental, and racial justice. NWBCCC is a membership-based organization that uses direct action community organizing to address affordable housing, public education, immigrant rights, youth, voting rights, economic development and jobs issues, and to fight for broader policy change in these and other areas.

We seek to hire a dynamic community organizer to work on housing issues. We are committed to fighting for decent healthy affordable housing for the people of the Northwest Bronx, and for all New Yorkers. Healthy housing, for us, includes a commitment to encouraging greater energy efficiency, to save money, protect our environment, and protect the respiratory health of Bronx residents. We believe that our organizing work should be led by our members, and that developing leadership is a key responsibility of our organizers. Thus, the organizer’s main responsibilities will be to:

• Support the continued development of the NWBCCC Healthy Green Housing Committee

• Conduct strategic tenant organizing of multi-family buildings

• Base-building through membership recruitment of community and faith-based institutions

• Leadership development to build capacity of community leaders and members

• Run local housing campaigns that target problem landlords, lenders and policies that contribute to deteriorating housing conditions.

• Coordinate participation of community leaders in city, state and federal housing campaigns

• Assist in writing reports to current housing funders and assist with grant development

• Attend weekly staff meetings and training opportunities

Requirements:
Minimum one year experience in organizing
Demonstrated commitment and passion for social justice and understanding of community organizing approach to social change.
Fluency in Spanish and English.
Have strong writing, communication and negotiation skills
Strong interest in and ability to work with diverse groups
Ability to work nights and weekends as necessary

Compensation:
