Street Vendor Project Seeks Community Organizer (NYC)

The Street Vendor Project is looking to hire a community organizer. You will:

  • Coordinate and implement membership recruitment activities including direct outreach on-the-street and through partner organizations
  • Receive vendors who come in to the office during SVP drop-in hours
  • Identify promising members to develop their interest and leadership in SVP
  • Plan regular membership and committee meetings focused on skill shares, political education, connection to campaign work, and building SVP’s membership
  • Maintain database for tracking participation and development of members
  • Maintain relationships with allied community organizations
  • Participate in legislative campaigns that engage members and leaders with elected officials and win concrete improvements in the lives of vendors.
  • Like most roles in a small organization, this role is flexible and the exact duties will be depend on the person who we hire

We are looking to hire someone who:

  • Loves to implement local programs and work on the ground with member leaders
  • Is relentlessly dedicated to building the power of low-wage, immigrant workers to participate in transformative social and economic justice movement building
  • Feels excited about working across multiple cultures and who is flexible and patient when communicating with people who speak different languages
  • Is a thoughtful communicator who is fluent in English
  • Mandarin, Bengali, Spanish and/or Arabic proficiency would be a big plus but is not a requirement

This is a full-time position with great flexibility in terms of scheduling. We would consider a strong candidate who is interested in working on a part-time basis.

Beyond the Choir Hiring Senior Strategist/Trainer

Beyond the Choir is seeking an experienced full-time person for our training and strategic advising work.

This person will play a leadership role in our organization, specifically in our support for progressive partner organizations and social movements. The full-time salaried position will involve training and curriculum development, strategic advising, developing leaders, and direct campaign support.

We believe this will require a large-scale political struggle. And we believe progressive forces can only win such a struggle if we build stronger organizations, bigger movements, and a broader alignment of social forces. The Work

This person will work in close collaboration with our director to provide training, advising, and direct support to the progressive organizations and social movements with which we partner. They will also help to coordinate the involvement of the larger BTC team in this work. The training that we provide to groups focuses on political alignment, political narrative, organizing and campaign skills, and internal group dynamics. In this political moment, we are also looking to scale up our training work in support of social movements. In addition to training, we regularly assist groups with writing and editing campaign materials, advising on strategic and tactical questions, and coaching leaders. This person will help with all of the above, and will also play an important role in taking responsibility for the internal and financial health of the organization. Job Requirements

  • At least three years experience working with progressive political organizations and/or social movements.
  • Ample experience as a trainer, and preferably experience with writing training curriculum.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with a team and with partner organizations.
  • Demonstrated ability to connect with people across differences of class, race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, and political beliefs.
  • Excellent communication skills, verbal and written.
  • A deep political analysis that is aligned with our mission of social, economic, and ecological justice.
  • Willingness to travel frequently. Location flexible (northeast US preferred, but flexible).

Brooklyn Waterfront Research Center (BWRC) Seeks Project Coordinator (Graduate Students Only)

The Brooklyn Waterfront Research Center (BWRC) at New York City College of Technology (CUNY) is seeking a highly motivated and organized individual who can advance the Center’s mission of being a place-based research and pedagogical forum that engages with the physical and cultural elements of the waterfront and its neighborhoods. The Center’s main public activities for each academic year include four “Breakfast Talks” and one major conference in the Spring semester. Topics of past Breakfast Talks include the history of biking in Coney Island, the gentrification of Sunset Park, and the history of the Gowanus Canal. The next annual conference in March 2017 will focus on transportation to, from, and along the Brooklyn Waterfront.

The Project Coordinator will be responsible for helping to shape events, promote them to CUNY and the public, and oversee the logistics of the events. Knowledge of urban planning, geography, politics, and history is helpful as most topics that the Center explores deal with one or more of these disciplines. An ability to understand and use online tools such as WordPress, EventBrite, and MailChimp is essential as is the ability to learn how to operate the Center’s custom-designed, interactive digital map. In practice, the role of project coordinator bridges academia, urban planning, and event coordination.

The candidate will work closely with the Center’s director.

Time Commitment: 8-15h/week, usually Tuesday mornings and all day Thursday. You will also be asked to work three Friday mornings during the semester.

Compensation: $20 per hour

Sierra Club Seeks Senior Campaign Representative, Clean Infrastructure (Washington, DC)

Reports To: Director of Sierra Club’s Labor and Economic Justice Program

Context: Plans, organizes and coordinates the activities of staff and volunteers in carrying out all aspects of Labor and Economic Justice Program related to the Beyond Dirty Fuels Campaign’s work on labor, economic justice and clean infrastructure. The Labor and Economic Justice Program addresses a wide range of issues aimed at ensuring that the transition from fossil fuels delivers on the potential for the clean energy economy to create millions of good, family supporting jobs.

Scope: The Senior Campaign Representative for Clean Infrastructure  works with Sierra Club’s Beyond Dirty Fuels Campaign national and regional staff, in coordination with Communications, Organizing, Digital, as well as chapter staff and volunteers, to design both national and localized organizing and campaign strategies to constructively engage the labor and economic justice communities to help ensure that the transition to a clean energy economy and phase out of oil and gas creates sustainable union jobs and strengthens local economies and communities.  This position will have a special emphasis on developing strong labor partnerships to foster support for water and other clean infrastructure, with a priority on bringing the benefits of clean infrastructure to low-income and communities of color.  The rep. will also work with the Beyond Dirty Fuels campaign to proactively prevent and address conflicts with labor partners.  Works with appropriate staff to integrate the goals and objectives of the Sierra Club’s Labor and Economic Justice Program and Beyond Dirty Fuels Campaign, and is a member of the Club’s Environmental and Economic Justice core national team.

Job Activities:

  1. Develops and conducts organizing and campaign strategies and initiatives in coordination with the Beyond Dirty Fuels Campaign and the Labor and Economic Justice Program. Works with national staff and volunteers, as well as regional and chapter staff and volunteers to develop and carry out the organizing/campaign plans, using the Sierra Club organizing model.
  2. Develops relationships with national and local allies and stakeholders within the labor community, and seeks to advance these relationships along a continuum towards coordinated joint action, particularly around building clean water infrastructure or clean energy infrastructure projects.
  3. Develops educational and campaign/program issues information. This may include the writing, editing and distribution of webinars, fact sheets, newsletters, and educational materials.  It may also include the writing, editing and reviewing of articles for conservation-related publications.
  4. Coordinates all activities with Beyond Dirty Fuels Campaign Director and the Labor and Economic Justice Program Director, ensuring collaboration, consistent messaging, and alignment of strategy with Beyond Dirty Fuels Campaign and Labor Program goals.
  5. Supports and provides professional expertise to staff and volunteers.  Works to develop and ensure that volunteers assume meaningful roles in the program/ campaign. Provides conservation and labor training to volunteers.
  6. Represents the Sierra Club to the general public, media or to outside officials. Conducts media outreach activities related to the campaign/program, including developing media outreach plans, serving as Sierra Club spokesperson to media outlets, and promotes volunteer media exposure.
  7. Develops relationships with elected public officials and their staffs.  Develops and conducts lobby campaigns associated with the Labor and Economic Justice Program and the Beyond Dirty Fuels Campaign.
  8. Performs miscellaneous duties as directed.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • B.A./B.S. degree in Political Science, Labor Studies, Environmental Studies or a closely related field, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum 4 years’ experience as a Washington D.C. associate representative, or in a comparable position in another organization which includes experience planning and conducting a national level campaign, including strategy, field organizing, lobbying, media, and work with senior level political leaders.
  • Excellent knowledge and background in US labor, racial justice, and social justice movements, including issue specific areas such as workforce development, labor rights, unions, collective bargaining rights, organizing, and economic development.
  • Experience coordinating work in a coalition setting, with demonstrated ability to navigate between multiple stakeholders.
  • Valid driver’s license, satisfactory driving record, and proof of auto insurance required.
  • Excellent demonstrated written and oral communication skills.  Demonstrated public speaking and media presentation ability.
  • Prior experience and demonstrated ability and effectiveness working with volunteers.

This position is represented by a collective bargaining unit and is subject to the terms and conditions of the contract between Sierra Club and John Muir Local.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collects and organizes information from various sources; analyzes and produces
  • material for use in the department for collective bargaining and special research projects.
  • Performs research work to support union position in labor-management meetings, policy issues and for meetings with government representatives and with related organizations.
  • Performs technical economic analysis in support of collective bargaining.  Collaborates with negotiators and collective bargaining committees on costing economic demands.
  • Responsible for all aspects of collective bargaining for assigned units.
  • Develops collective bargaining proposals with local leadership and rank and file
  • committees and prepares them for presentation to management.
  • Acts as chief spokesperson during negotiations.
  • Attends local membership meetings and makes presentations on collective bargaining issues and outcomes.
  • Drafts contract language; proofs contracts and readies final contract for
  • signature.
  • Works with local leadership and Council field staff on contract enforcement,
  • including attending labor-management meetings and personnel issues.
  • Performs related duties.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • B.A. Degree; strong analytical and quantitative background required.
  • Experience in public policy and/or labor relations preferred.
  • Excellent research, writing and speaking skills.
  • Proven financial and data analysis skills.
  • Intermediate or advanced level experience using Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Access or other comparable database and spreadsheet software.

Tenants & Neighbors Seeks VISTA Tenant Organizer (NYC)

The Vista tenant organizer position will be a two-year position funded by the federal housing agency, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) as part of a national tenant organizing program. The tenant organizer will assist, inform, educate, and engage tenants living in buildings that are at risk of loss of affordability, assist in campaigns to preserve HUD-assisted affordable housing, and participate in a national movement to preserve at risk-affordable housing with the National Alliance of HUD Tenants (NAHT). We are seeking a Vista Tenant Organizer to carry out outreach, education, and organizing work associated with this new grant.
