Make the Road New York Seeks Youth Power Project Lead Organizer (Brooklyn, NY)

Make the Road New York (MRNY) is a 23,000 member-strong membership organization which catalyzes broad city, state and national public policy reform from the ground up. Through organizing, high-quality service provision and advocacy, MRNY works to promote equity and opportunity for working class New Yorkers.

The Youth Power Project (YPP) supports youth of color in becoming effective spokespeople, decision-makers and organizers on issues important to them. YPP uses a multi-pronged strategy of community organizing, media advocacy and movement and coalition-building to fight for community-based solutions to police brutality, immigration and education justice.

 

Current Opening:

MRNY is seeking a Lead Organizer to build MRNY’s base of youth leaders in Brooklyn & Queens and support youth members in waging bold and strategic campaigns around education justice and immigration. 

The position would be ideal for an energetic, flexible and experienced organizer with a commitment to education, social justice and community organizing. The candidate will work within the Youth Power Project (YPP) to strengthen the power and capacity of its base, develop the leadership of our members, and advance city and state-wide campaigns. Additionally, the candidate will represent Make the Road New York at coalition tables working on education.

Responsibilities:

· Engaging multiple stakeholders involved in education issues including youth leaders, elected officials, funders and organizational leaders in the social justice field

· Coordinate and engage in public campaigns designed to mobilize young people and proposed City and State legislation through action research, coordinating campaign events, alliance work, and electoral organizing

· Develop and implement leadership development curriculum 

· Support building a membership base of youth of color grassroots leaders in Brooklyn and Queens with our YPP Organizers. 

· Supervise and support YPP Organizers in implementing key areas of work and developing their skills 

· Working with MRNY’s YPP team, key member leaders and allies to move forward city, state and federal campaigns

· Participate in development activities (e.g. grant/report writing, individual donor cultivation, etc.) to raise financial resources for YPP priorities

· Build and maintain school and community partnerships 

· Provide support and participation for organization-wide and regional campaigns and events

Qualifications:

The successful candidate must have 5 years demonstrated experience working with youth, preferable in an organizing or youth development setting; a commitment to social justice and youth leadership; passion/knowledge of immigration and education justice issues; strong interpersonal and communications skills; and be open to working some evenings and weekends. The organizer must be ready to work with and engage young people in both our Brooklyn and Queens offices and in public high school classrooms.
