Jews for Racial Economic Justice is seeking a Deputy Director

JFRE is seeking a Deputy Director to lead our growing development department and work closely with the Executive Director to strengthen JFREJ’s internal management, across the organization.

Type: Full-time, benefits

Rate: $80,000 – $90,000 with full benefits package

Reports to: Executive Director

Summary: Reporting to the Executive Director, the Deputy Director will play a key role in supporting JFREJ’s ongoing and sustainable growth and health. The Deputy Director will be instrumental in leading and overseeing critical internal operations, including directing our development department, raising our annual budget, and developing processes that ensure strong alignment, communication, and cohesion across the organization’s full staff team. Over the past 5 years, our dues-paying membership has grown to nearly 7,000, our team has grown from 5 full-time to 11 full-time and 2 part-time staff, and our budget has increased from $800k to $1.8m, with an overall goal of reaching $2.2m by the end of 2022. We’ve also recently completed a membership-wide strategy process that resulted in a clearer articulation of our approach, priorities, and long-term goals, as well as the creation of a new 501c4 that is now the home-base for all of our organizing.

Position Description

At this exciting moment of growth and transition, we are looking for a Deputy Director who will play a critical role in our leadership team. This is a newly configured senior position that will both lead our growing development department and work closely with the Executive Director to strengthen JFREJ’s internal management, organization-wide. They will partner with the Executive Director in the cultivation of an organizational culture that reflects our core values and principles and that deepens our integration of fundraising/resource mobilization as a fundamental part of our organizing work.

The Deputy Director will be responsible for leading our development department and raising our growing budget of $2.2m by the end of 2022 and for developing and successfully implementing sustainable revenue plans for our next phase of growth. This position is responsible for the bulk of our major gifts program and for bottomlining all the fundraising aspects of our annual event, The Mazals. They will supervise and mentor our Development Manager, who holds grants management, grassroots fundraising, donor stewardship, and our development internship program. Our Development Manager also supervises our Database & Development Associate, who holds the day-to-day management and maintenance of our CRM (Every Action). We are actively looking for a candidate who will continue to invest in our Development Manager’s leadership and support her growth as an emerging leader in JFREJ’s development team.

The Deputy Director will also be responsible for designing and implementing a range of organization-wide initiatives to support staff morale and to develop an ever healthier work environment as the organization grows. These efforts include, but are not limited to, activities in the following areas: staff leadership and professional development, team building, annual reviews and systems for ongoing learning and feedback, effective cross-team planning and coordination, organizational culture building with an eye towards incorporating feminist, anti-racist, and restorative frameworks and practices, improving personnel policies to strengthen equity and sustainability, pacing to ensure the health and well-being of staff, and leading organizational learning and scaling-up initiatives.

Job Responsibilities

Organizational Development & Management (40%)

  • Partnering with the Executive Director on big picture programmatic, administrative, human resources, and budget decisions and strategies;

  • Leading organizational development work, designing and overseeing implementation of organizational assessment and evaluation systems, and overseeing infrastructure strengthening projects;

  • Applying and deepening JFREJ’s feminist and anti-racist lens in our organizing work, fundraising strategy, personnel policies, and staff culture;

  • Designing and overseeing implementation of systems and protocols to facilitate optimal organizational, team, and staff development, performance, and sustainability.

Fundraising & Development (60%)

  • Leading strategy and planning for the department, including the creation and tracking of quantifiable long and short-term goals in all aspects of fundraising;

  • Supporting and growing the leadership of the Development Manager in her management of the grants, grassroots fundraising, and stewardship programs; her hiring and supervision of one intern per quarter (on average); and her management of our Database & Development Associate who manages the Every Action database;

  • Crafting annual revenue budgets in conjunction with the Development Manager and in consultation with the Executive Director;

  • Developing our major gifts program and strategy, including medium and long-term prospecting;

  • Directing the stewardship of a $1M portfolio in annual major gifts (divvied up between senior staff) with a goal to grow this revenue stream to $1.5M by 2025;

  • Project managing all aspects of the Executive Director’s major donor portfolio and ensuring that she has the data and tools necessary to succeed in her fundraising responsibilities;

  • Directing the overall vision and direction for the fundraising of The Mazals, JFREJ’s annual fundraising event, while collaborating with other team members on the event’s other (programmatic) components;

  • Engaging major, institutional, and other donors in political education around 501c4 support;

  • Staffing the Board fundraising committee and supporting Board members to effectively engage in, and embrace, fundraising work;

  • Cultivating and nurturing a culture of fundraising and base-building throughout the organization.

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • Alignment with JFREJ’s mission and our individual campaigns;

  • At least five years of management experience, with a track record of building and retaining diverse and dynamic teams;

  • Demonstrable commitment to racial, economic and social justice and building organizational systems that reflect those values;

  • At least five years experience in development overall, including in event management

  • At least three years experience in major donor fundraising and a track record of securing four- and five-figure gifts within portfolios ranging from $1m to $3m;

  • Understanding of grassroots community organizing, membership-based organizations, and/or electoral organizing.

Desired Qualities and Experience:

  • Passion for anti-racist management and building “leader-full” organizational culture;

  • At least one six figure gift secured;

  • An understanding of Jewish culture and/or the progressive political landscape in NYC;

  • Past development experience at a member-based or community organization;

  • Experience developing the leadership of women of color;

  • Experience with scaling/capital campaigns and/or advanced major donor prospecting;

  • Experience with partnerships between 501c3 and 501c4 organizations and understanding of compliance requirements;

  • Experience with EveryAction (CRM)

Salary and benefits: The salary for this position is $80,000-$90,000, depending on experience, with an extremely competitive benefit package and generous personnel policies including: 100% employee sponsored premiums for healthcare and additional healthcare reimbursement account, employer 401(k) match, flexible work schedule, 15 holidays a year, 15 vacation days in first year and 20 days in subsequent years, 12 sick days, family leave benefits that far exceed NYS requirements, and sabbatical leave. We are currently working remotely due to COVID-19. This person would need to be able to be in NYC no later than March 2022.
