CLIMATE JOBS NATIONAL RESOURCE CENTER SEEKS A COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR

Director of Communications

(CJNRC is based in New York)

 

Climate Jobs National Resource Center (CJNRC) is a new organization built on the fundamental proposition that labor unions must lead on combating climate change and reversing income inequality. Our mission is to advocate for a clean energy economy at the scale climate science demands, create good union jobs, and support more equitable communities.

CJNRC works with unions across the U.S. to form their own state-based, labor-only Climate Jobs coalitions to address the growing climate crisis and the rising economic disparities by creating family-sustaining clean energy jobs. CJNRC provides strategic and technical support to these state-led Climate Jobs coalitions to develop action plans specific to their states to create good, clean jobs, organize union members around the plan, and develop a strategic campaign to win its implementation. CJNRC is also working with our state coalitions to build crucial support from the bottom up for necessary federal action on climate change and good jobs.

Communications Director Job Responsibilities:

  • Drive forward a multi-channeled national communications strategy
  • Assist CJNRC state coalitions in developing and implementing a communications strategy
  • Work with CJNRC state coalition leaders to identify and train union members as effective public messengers in all campaigns
  • Lead a team of communication, marketing, and design professionals
  • Lead preparation of communication materials including press releases and newsletters
  • Work with team to develop the organization’s voice and maintain the tone integrity across all platforms
  • Manage media relations and develop contacts with media members, influencers, and community leaders
  • Oversee the creation of digital, video, audio, and print content
  • Track engagement across various platforms and make data-driven decisions
  • Manage presence at industry events, trade shows, and conferences
  • Create a budget for the communications team and ensure compliance

Communications Director Qualifications / Skills:

  • A strong commitment to progressive social change, racial justice, support labor unions, and a familiarity with the issues that are central to CJNRC’s work and vision
  • Impeccable copywriting and copy-editing abilities. Strong writing skills are a must
  • Demonstrated knowledge and proficiency with communications technologies
  • Understanding of copywriting, graphic design, layout, and publishing
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and social media marketing
  • Experience with media relations
  • Excellent verbal communication and presentation skills

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing or a related discipline
  • Four-plus years of communications, marketing or public relations or related experience, preferably for unions or other advocacy organizations
  • Experience managing digital content
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
  • Established national work and media relations a plus
