The Partnership for Working Families (Partnership), with our 19 affiliate organizations, is driving a progressive agenda to harness the power of cities and influence billions of dollars in public and private investment to advance the public good. Our network is building powerful, governing coalitions with a grassroots base of leaders to advance a vision of just, sustainable, and democratic cities by:

●  Restructuring our economy to advance economic, racial and gender justice,

●  Reshaping our built environment to create healthier communities and slow climate change, and

●  Remaking our democracy by building power through civic engagement and leadership development.

The ​We Make This City​ campaign (wemakethiscity.org) is a national effort made up of ​10 distinct place-based campaigns with shared strategies, principles, and a unifying vision. We start from the premise that our country has an abundance of resources to provide everything we need, but too few people control those resources and the people in power have created or bought into a false sense of scarcity.​ ​We are organizing for​ the systems and structures we need to live full and healthy lives– like safe & affordable housing, excellent public transit & schools, and community-controlled development– to ​build community wealth and health and put power into the hands of the people who live and work in our communities, rather than corporations. Our campaigns center racial and climate justice.

We are seeking an experienced campaigner to join our team! We are open to this being a director or lead campaigner position and invite candidates to apply for the level that matches your experience and skill set.

The ideal candidate will have a deep commitment to social, racial, gender, economic and climate justice and supporting local campaigns at the intersections of these issues.


The person in this position will advance the We Make This City campaign. A director level position would be responsible for leading the overall campaign in collaboration with the current campaign director, including setting vision, priorities, and direction and developing cohesion between local campaigns. A lead level position would be responsible for leading projects and elements within the campaign, with input on the vision, priorities, and direction.

The primary roles for this position include:

  •  Campaign Development & Execution
    • Work with local campaigns to identify, develop, and execute campaign strategies and tactics that will advance local campaigns and our national campaign, including corporate campaign, cultural or narrative, base building, and policy strategies.
    • Work with affiliates, movement partners, and Partnership staff to identify, develop, and execute multi-city or national opportunities to advance the campaign vision, narrative, and strategies.
    • Support the Communications Director in executing a communications plan that delivers a shared narrative and message about our campaigns.
    • Additional responsibilities for a director position (in partnership with current campaign director) include:
      • Continue to develop and drive the overall national campaign vision and arc.
      • Ensure the way in which the team executes the campaign builds network and affiliate capacities, relationships, and analyses.
      • Convene affiliates across cities and foster collaboration as is strategic.
      • Develop annual budgets and allocate resources and staff time based on campaign priorities.
  • Network Organizing
    • Convene affiliates to build a connected and collaborative space that advances local campaigns and builds our collective power.
    • Create opportunities to increase affiliate capacity by providing strategic support that could include coaching, research, strategy development, etc.
    • Build strong and effective partnerships with each affiliate and a deep understanding of their campaign goals and strategies.
  • Coalition Building
    • Serve as a powerful, inspiring public voice for the network’s vision and represent the work of the network at events, policy meetings, public meetings, and 1-1 meetings.
    • Build partnerships with movement allies and identify opportunities for collaboration/coordination that strengthens local campaigns.


  • Alignment with the Partnership’s organizational values.
  • Demonstrated commitment to social, racial, gender, economic and environmental justice.
  • Director candidates should have 5+ years of experience in a comparable position and lead candidates should have 2-3 years of experience in a comparable position moving/supporting intersectional issue-based campaigns that includes:
    • Developing creative, effective strategies to influence decision makers in the public and private sectors and build the power of working people and people of color.
    • Co-strategizing and collaborating with a range of partners to advance shared goals.
    •  Convening/building coalitions or cohorts that advance shared goals.
    • Providing training and/or coaching to campaign staff including organizers, researchers, and communicators.
    • Developing and facilitating meeting agendas that advance collective work.
  • Excellent project management skills with the ability to keep long and short-term projects moving at the same time.
  • Outstanding written and spoken communication skills.
  • Ability to travel on at least a monthly basis required.
  • Preferred qualifications, but not required:
    • Subject matter expertise on one or more of the following: public revenue, infrastructure, affordable housing, economic development, and/or work & employment;
    • Experience in one or more of the following:
      • conducting campaign research on private actors, power structures, and public policy matters;
      • conducting field research and/or community engagement processes;
      • direct community or worker organizing;
      • Developing and implementing political and/or popular education projects;
      • developing and executing innovative cultural and narrative projects to advance campaign work; and/or
      • developing innovative local policies that attack root problems of wealth, racial, and gender inequity.
    • Experience coordinating program and projects across multiple geographies. 

Compensation And Location

This is a full-time position. We offer a competitive starting salary between $50,000-69,000 for leads and $70,000-83,000 for directors (based on experience) and generous benefits, including covering full health benefit premiums (health, dental and vision) and a 401k plan with an employer contribution.

The position will ideally be located in a city in which a one of the Partnership’s 19 affiliates is located, but we will consider exceptional candidates who are located in other cities and major media markets.
