Teachers Unite is a 501(c)(3) independent membership organization of public school educators in New York City collaborating with youth and parents to transform the city’s and the nation’s public schools. We resist institutions that segregate and criminalize Black and Latino/a youth, such as the school-to-prison pipeline, by organizing educators to work as allies in local and national campaigns for social and economic justice. We develop and share resources for restorative justice and school-based power-building that promote grassroots leadership in public education, and we conduct collaborative research on pressing educational issues. We believe that schools can only be transformed when educators work with and learn from parents and youth to achieve social and economic justice. Teachers Unite is an active member and leader within the national Dignity in Schools Campaign (DSC) and its local chapter DSC-NY.

Position Description:

Teachers Unite has an immediate opening for a motivated, energetic, and dedicated full time School Site Organizer in our Chelsea, NYC office. The School Site Organizer will work collaboratively with Teachers Unite staff and members to develop and achieve goals in our different areas of work, including base-building, leadership development, school-site campaigns, city-wide and national coalitions, communications, and fundraising. The School Site Organizer will support our public school educator members to meaningfully participate in campaigns both in schools and city-wide, and to share with one another the skills and strategies they use to grow Restorative Justice, grassroots collaborative leadership, and democracy in their own schools.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Grow number of dues-paying members and leaders through building relationships and coordinating leadership development opportunities
• Support members to build organizing skills and collaboratively plan campaigns with multiple stakeholders at their schools
• Collaboratively plan and facilitate TU members’ organizing and meetings including: decision-making discussions, workshops, peer exchanges, community events, and convenings
• Represent TU as well as coordinate member involvement and contributions to DSC and DSC-NY
• Mobilize membership turnout for campaign actions, hearings, etc.
• Collaboratively develop policy and budget goals and recommendations

Qualifications:

• At least two years of labor organizing experience required, including workplace mapping, campaign development, coalition work, leadership development, and member mobilization.
• Previous professional experience as a K-12 public school educator strongly preferred
• Familiarity with the New York City public school system preferred
• Support for Teachers Unite’s mission, vision, and theory of social change
• Ability to work independently and juggle multiple projects and priorities
• Detail-oriented with strong organizational and interpersonal skills
• Self-starter and creative thinker who will take initiative
• Demonstrated commitment to social justice and experience in racial / economic justice movements
• Experience working in a diverse environment with a strong awareness of cultural sensitivity and gender expression
• Experience with Restorative Justice and organizing against the Prison Industrial Complex a plus
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Comfort in using Microsoft Office, e-mail, Google tools, CiviCRM database, social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.), and other web-based software such as Constant Contact
• Bachelor’s degree preferred
• Experience supervising interns at college and masters level a plus
