Street Vendor Project Seeks Organizer (NYC)

Send a cover letter, resume, and two references to svp@urbanjustice.org. Please put “Organizer” in the subject line. Candidates are strongly encouraged to familiarize themselves with our work by visiting www.streetvendor.org prior to applying. We seek to hire for this position as soon as possible and will accept applications and conduct interviews on a rolling basis.

The Street Vendor Project of the Urban Justice Center is a grassroots membership organization that helps street vendors take action to defend and expand their rights, improve their working conditions, and strengthen and grow their businesses. We also celebrate the long history of street vending in New York City, the vibrancy and energy street vending brings to communities throughout the city, and the diversity of cultures from which vendors come.

We are currently seeking an experienced grassroots organizer for a temporary position. This person will, working alongside staff and vendors, play a critical role in the final phase of a multi-year campaign to get the city to lift the cap on the number of permits available for street vending and to make other important changes to the vending laws. The ideal candidate will be able to hit the ground running and will bring energy, enthusiasm, and dedication to the role. This position will include:

·     Conducting extensive outreach to members about the status of the campaign, both phone outreach and in person visits to vendors on the streets

·     Mobilizing vendors for and helping with the coordination of upcoming grassroots actions

·     Helping with the coordination of vendor meetings, including our monthly leadership and general membership meetings, as well bi-weekly campaign committee meetings

·     Identifying concrete ways that allied organizations can support the campaign and facilitating their involvement

·     Educating elected officials, staff of administrative agencies, and other key government stakeholders about our campaign

·     Assisting with media work, including social media

·     Supporting fundraising efforts for the campaign, both grassroots fundraising and institutional fundraising

·     Providing other support to the campaign and organization as needed, with a focus on base building, member engagement, and leadership development

Qualifications:

·     At least 2-3 years of organizing experience, ideally with a grassroots economic justice organization

·     Experience playing a central role in a member-led legislative system change campaign

·     High level of proficiency in Spanish, Arabic, and/or Bengali

·     Enthusiastic, adaptable, and excited about working in a collaborative environment with a fluid, organic approach to the work and a strong commitment to grassroots member leadership

This is a temporary position (approximately three months) to assist with the final phase of our current campaign. There may be a possibility for continued employment after this temporary position ends.
