Make the Road New York (www.maketheroadny.org) is a non-profit organization that builds the power of Latino and working class communities to achieve dignity and justice through organizing, policy innovation, transformative education, and survival services. We have 16,000 members and operate five community centers in Bushwick, Brooklyn; Jackson Heights, Queens; Port Richmond and Midland Beach, Staten Island; and Brentwood, Long Island.
MRNY is seeking a Fair and Just Policing Youth Organizer (20 Hours a week) to build MRNY’s base of youth leaders and engage young people in bringing attention to police accountability issues in New York City.
The position would be ideal for a young, energetic and experienced organizer with a background related to police brutality, social justice, and community organizing. The candidate will work within the Youth Power Project (YPP) to build a strong base, nurture the leadership of our members and advance city-wide and state-wide campaigns around police reform. Additionally, the candidate will represent Make the Road New York at the ‘Communities united for Police Reform’ partner table working to advance police reform strategies.
Responsibilities:
- Engaging multiple stakeholders involved in police brutality issues including youth leaders, politicians, law enforcement officers, funders and organizational leaders in the social justice/police accountability field
- Coordinate and engage in public campaigns designed to mobilize people around issues of police accountability and proposed City and State legislation
- Creating and facilitating leadership development curriculum and materials
- Identifying and nurturing youth of color as grassroots leaders
- Building a membership base of youth affected by police misconduct
- Working with MRNY’s YPP team, key member leaders and allies to move forward city-wide and state-wide campaigns
Qualifications:
The successful candidate must have 1-3 years demonstrated experience working with youth, preferable in an organizing or youth development setting; a commitment to social justice and youth leadership; a Bachelor’s Degree preferred; strong interpersonal and communications skills; and be open to working some evenings and weekends. The position will be based out of MRNY’s Bushwick, Brooklyn office, but the organizer must be ready to work with and engage young people in all our offices and in public high school classrooms. Ability to speak Spanish is preferred.
