Make the Road New York (www.maketheroadny.org) is a non-profit organization that builds the power of Latino and working class communities to achieve dignity and justice through organizing, policy innovation, transformative education, and survival services. We have 16,000 members and operate five community centers in Bushwick, Brooklyn; Jackson Heights, Queens; Port Richmond and Midland Beach, Staten Island; and Brentwood, Long Island.
MRNY is seeking a Youth Organizer (full time) to build MRNY’s base of youth leaders in Brooklyn and engage young people in bringing attention to youth issues at the City, State and Federal level.
The position would be ideal for a young, energetic and experienced organizer with a background related to education, social justice, community organizing and youth development. The candidate will work within the Youth Power Project (YPP) to build a strong base, nurture the leadership of our members and advance city-wide and state-wide campaigns. Additionally, the candidate will provide leadership for Make the Road New York at coalition partner tables, such as the Urban Youth Collaborative and the Dignity in Schools Campaign.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Build a membership base of youth in Bushwick, Brooklyn
- Engage multiple stakeholders involved on issues including youth leaders, elected officials, funders and organizational leaders in the social justice and education field
- Work closely with Bushwick Campus Community School to support implementation of community school model, restorative justice and youth engagement
- Coordinate and engage in public campaigns designed to mobilize people around issues of education reform and proposed City and State legislation
- Create and facilitate leadership development curriculum and materials
- Identifying and nurturing youth of color as grassroots leaders in Brooklyn
- Work with MRNY’s YPP team, key member leaders and allies to move forward city-wide and state-wide campaigns
- Support MRNY’s organizational wide events throughout the year
Qualifications:
The successful candidate must have 2-5 years demonstrated experience working with youth, preferable in an organizing or youth development setting; a commitment to social justice and youth leadership; a Bachelor’s Degree (preferred); strong interpersonal and communications skills; and be open to working some evenings and weekends. The position will be based out of MRNY’s, Bushwick, Brooklyn office and will coordinate with a team of youth organizers in Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island. The organizer must be ready to work with and engage young people in the Brooklyn community and in public high school classrooms. Ability to speak Spanish is preferred. We are looking for a creative thinker who has the ability to develop specific project goals, implement new strategies and use social media communications to advance our campaigns.
