GrowNYC, a non-profit with a forty-five year history of improving the environment in New York City, is interviewing qualified candidates for 2 Recycling Outreach Coordinator positions with GrowNYC’s Zero Waste Programs funded by the NYC Department of Sanitation.
Created to meet the ambitious recycling goals outlined in the City’s Comprehensive Solid Waste Management Plan of 2006, these programs focus on waste prevention, composting and recycling outreach and education, and assisting in developing and implementing additional waste diversion activities. Working closely with the Department of Sanitation, GrowNYC’s Zero Waste Programs strive to generally increase New York City’s recycling diversion rates through waste prevention, reuse and increased participation in curbside recycling and organics collections.
Position Summary
This full time position offers the opportunity for a highly motivated individual with community outreach skills to promote recycling and waste reduction. Under the supervision of GrowNYC’s Zero Waste Program Director, the Recycling Outreach Coordinators will be responsible for implementing outreach activities described in GrowNYC’s work plan. Some of the duties and responsibilities shall include:
- Working with the Director to create and implement community based recycling plans.
- Conducting waste audits in large residences where feasible.
- Meeting with community groups, building owners, building service personnel, tenants, homeowners, and others to promote recycling and waste prevention.
- Cultivating and training volunteers to promote recycling and waste prevention.
- Attending community events and public meetings to encourage increased recycling and waste reduction.
- Educating NYC Housing Authority residents to promote participation in recycling and waste prevention programs, in partnership with NYCHA.
- Recruiting and training volunteers in NYCHA buildings to promote recycling and waste prevention.
- Setting up one-time special events, such as neighborhood textile collections.
- Carrying out other efforts as directed to implement the goals of Zero Waste to Landfills by 2030.
Candidates should be highly motivated and have community outreach experience. Candidates must have excellent communication skills and be able to work well with diverse communities. Outreach takes place in a variety of community settings and often requires a large percentage of time spent outside the office. We seek energetic people who have the ability to work independently and as a team and are capable of setting and meeting goals. Additional qualifications include:
- Experience organizing and working with communities to effect change
- Strong oral and written communications skills, including public speaking, information materials development and social media
- Experience in data collection, input and analysis
- Team player who works well with others as well as independently
- Second language skills strongly encouraged
- Ability to juggle multiple tasks
- Willingness to travel throughout the city to meet with individuals and attend community meetings and events
- Ability to work occasional nights and weekends
- Ability to move or carry items such as a folding table, tent, or box of literature, and stand for extended periods of time (if able)
- Bachelors degree required
- Computer literate with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
- Valid NY State driver’s license
