Arab American Association of New York Seeks Lead Organizer and Advocacy Trainer

The Arab American Association of New York is a 501(c) (3) not-for-profit social service organization located in Brooklyn, New York. Our mission is to support and empower the Arab American and immigrant community by providing services that will help them to adjust to their new homeland and become active members of American society. Our aim is for families to achieve the ultimate goals of independence, productivity, and stability.

The Lead Organizer and Advocacy Trainer is an activist, educator and coordinator who facilitates a women’s advocacy programn and contributes to our organization-wide advocacy and organizing efforts. They are responsible for leading the Advocacy and Civic Engagement (ACE) Department at the Arab American Association of New York and coordinating the Advocacy departments’ multiple campaigns and projects with the support of the Youth Lead Organizer and Community organizer. These campaigns and projects include law enforcement accountability, immigration justice, women’s advocacy, and anti-racism. The ideal candidate will have extensive organizing experience, preferably within the Arab community, as well as curriculum design and facilitation experience.

Primary duties include but are not limited to:

  • Facilitating a women’s advocacy program, AWAL (Arab Women Activists & Leaders). AWAL is an advocacy and organizing class for Arab women and women of color in our community. Trainer is responsible for facilitating 2-3, 2 hour sessions of AWAL each week based on existing curriculum, and report back to Advocacy team weekly.
  • Recruiting 20-30 participants for AWAL each semester, coordinating sessions, and enhancing and revising its curriculum as needed.
  • Facilitating and strengthening this multilingual program with women of diverse ages and ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the program through participant feedback and consistent evaluations.
  • Building AWAL participants into a base of local organizers who are inspired to identify and work on issues of their own interests, as well as to take on issues, actions and projects the ACE Department already works on.
  • Infusing advocacy work into other AAANY departments, especially in our Adult Education program. This means creating and facilitating monthly ACE workshops in all of our adult education classes on important topics (e.g. Know Your Rights, information on new laws or executive orders that have an impact on our community, and ethnic heritage months)
  • Representing AAANY and working in coalitions with other NYC organizations and communities of color.

Qualifications:

  • Fluent in Arabic and familiar with multiple dialects required. Native Arabic speakers especially encouraged.
  • Several years of community organizing and group facilitation experience preferred, particularly with women and/or immigrant communities.
  • Exceptional communication and public speaking skills
  • Strong multi-tasking and delegation skill
  • Flexible schedule – some nights and weekends may be required
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred, or commensurate experience
