Center for Popular Democracy Seeks High Road Campaigns Director, Fair Workweek Initiative

Across the country, workers in growing sectors like retail, food service, and healthcare struggle with unpredictable schedules with fluctuating part-time hours that wreak havoc on their lives and cause economic insecurity. The Center for Popular Democracy’s Fair Workweek Initiative (FWI) is seeking a High Road Campaigns Director to drive national field and digital campaigns that improve scheduling standards in low-wage sectors for hourly workers. Our campaigns are rooted in the leadership of women and communities of color to hold corporations accountable for delivering equitable 21st century workweeks.

Job Responsibilities

The Campaigns Director will develop and drive campaign strategy to raise scheduling standards across the service sector through corporate engagement strategies, worker leadership development, and workforce development programming by CPD partners. The Campaigns Director will supervise a Program Coordinator who will oversee the workforce development and employer engagement programs. The Director will play a hands-on role with at least six CPD partner organizations, implement worker-driven campaign strategies and partner with employers interested in our High Road Workweek Pledge. The Campaigns Director will report to the Director of the Fair Workweek Initiative and will have duties that include:

Campaign Strategy and Coordination & Capacity-Building

  • Develop comprehensive worker-driven campaigns to compel industry-wide scheduling reforms and recruit forward-thinking employers to join the High Road Workweek Partnership, which works with leading corporate employers on implementing improved scheduling standards informed by worker input, an independent research-based assessment, and a multi-stakeholder process.
  • Work with CPD partners to implement scaled comprehensive worker-driven campaigns for with innovative strategies to push for raised industry standards in the low-wage service sector, providing staff training and support in worker organizing, and worker leadership development;
  • Work with CPD’s communications and digital teams to drive and implement innovative, creative digital organizing and communications strategies that advance worker organizing, industry change and foster a broader dialogue on fair workweek issues
  • Provide the infrastructure for grassroots groups to collaborate, coordinate strategies, organize national days of action, and convene national committee calls and meetings of member leaders;
  • Work with the Deputy Director of policy campaigns to provide support to the coalition, political, and media work related to policy campaigns where partners are also engaged in worker organizing.
  • Supervise the Program Coordinator who will develop and implement a new workforce development program to develop workers’ skills and leadership within the service sector, piloting the program in two sites and expanding to others as funds are raised.
  • Manage worker and worker-related ally lists to support consistent communication with the Fair Workweek networks.
  • Provide capacity-building support to partners, including developing campaign tools so partners may better develop the skills of members to take leadership in strategic planning, activate their coworkers, and speak publicly; digital and communications technical assistance or support to partner organizations as needed; training partners to conduct participatory action research on economic justice issues through surveys, focus groups and interviews.
  • Directly engage and develop the leadership of workers connected through digital strategies to drive corporate accountability campaigns and build sustainable worker networks.
  • Working with the Initiative Director to fundraise to support the national program and to re-grant significant resources to partners in the field.

Qualifications

Candidates should have at least 8-10 years of relevant campaign experience, including 5 years of managerial-level experience in directing worker or community organizing campaigns, running an issue-based or corporate campaign, developing grassroots leadership and building worker committees; coalition-building, and utilizing digital campaign strategies to drive campaigns.

We are seeking outcome-driven candidates with excellent relationship-building skills. Ideal candidates should have demonstrated experience in the following:

A strong commitment to social justice and an understanding of challenges facing caregivers, communities of color, and low-and moderate-income families;

  • Experience with supervision and navigating organizational partnerships;
  • A track record of developing and maintaining strong working relationships with a diverse group of stakeholders;
  • Experience managing multiple projects and ability to coordinate with partners on digital campaigning, earned media, and joint campaign projects in a fast-paced environment;
  • Strong writing skills for public education, digital organizing, and earned media;
  • Experience with earned media, social media, multimedia and/or creative communications strategies;
  • Foundation and other fundraising experience.
