Brooklyn Navy Yard Seeks Vice President of External Affairs

The Vice President of External Affairs leads the department and is tasked with raising the visibility of the Yard; securing grant funding from government and philanthropy; developing and executing marketing and public affairs strategies; maintaining positive and productive partnerships with government representatives and community groups; overseeing tenant/business support services; overseeing the operations of all public programming at Building 92 and across the Yard; and building strategic partnerships.

Areas of Responsibility

  • Supervise and lead a staff of four direct reports covering government and community relations, fundraising and marketing, building 92 and public programming, and tenant/business services;
  • Oversee community and government affairs, including responding to elected official requests for information, organizing updates to government and community partners, and ensuring that partners are aware of opportunities/developments/programs at the Yard;
  • Work in partnership with a contracted government and community relations firm to ensure productive engagement;
  • Cultivate and manage relationships with corporate, foundation, and government funders to generate revenue and inform policy and program decisions; and support capital fundraising efforts for all of the Yard;
  • Oversee marketing initiatives for BNYDC, the Employment Center, and BLDG 92;
  • Develop organizational brand through conferences and events, speaking opportunities, messaging, and other corporate communications;
  • Work in partnership with contracted public relations firm to raise visibility of Yard; secure press, coordinate media outreach and identify platforms to elevate Brooklyn Navy Yard brand and core issues;
  • Develop programming at BLDG 92 and across the Yard with a focus on public access, educational programming, and programming featuring tenant work;
  • Lead all tenant engagement initiatives including outreach, marketing opportunities resources, and program involvement.
  • Analyze data and program outcomes to determine the viability of programs;
  • Work across departmental databases to ensure accuracy, track trends and report on areas of opportunity; and
  • Lead internal corporate communications. 

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to interact with all levels of management and staff.
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage staff and mobilize around department/corporate vision and goals.
  • Experience in fundraising, marketing, and grant writing. 
  • Strong background in external affairs, community relations, and funder/donor management.
  • Ability to work in a small, entrepreneurial environment; self-starter.
  • Commitment to teamwork and an integrated approach to project delivery. 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) from an accredited four-year college/university required
  • Master’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Public Affairs or related field strongly preferred
  • 7-10 years of experience in relevant field required
