Brooklyn A (Brooklyn Legal Services Corporation A) Seeks Fair Housing Advocate

Brooklyn Legal Services Corporation A (Brooklyn A) seeks a Fair Housing Advocate for its Group Representation Unit of its Preserving Affordable Housing Program. This is a position within the Unit to focusing on educating and engaging communities around the fair housing laws and enforcing their protections for low-income tenants in Brooklyn.

Since 1968, Brooklyn A has provided free legal services for low income residents and organizations of Brooklyn, pursuing a neighborhood based mission of justice, empowerment and community development.

Working closely with the Unit’s staff and under the supervision of its Director, the Advocate will coordinate a comprehensive outreach campaign to educate vulnerable tenants about their rights under the fair housing laws to combat discrimination and neighborhood segregation.

Responsibilities include:

  • Designing and executing a curriculum of know-your-rights workshops, community presentations, and educational seminars to residents, community organizations, grassroots coalitions, faith-based organizations, affordable housing advocates, public agencies, and other local stakeholders.
  • Engaging community coalitions, advocates, and public officials in dialogue about affirmatively furthering fair housing in communities suffering from massive displacement and in the context of rezonings, land use policies, affordable housing development, and other urban planning measures that can greatly impact neighborhood segregation.
  • Publishing and distributing widely a broad array of informational materials that explain fair housing protections, methods of filing complaints, and resources for assistance in pursuing claims of housing discrimination.
  • Engaging in communications and media strategies that spread awareness of housing issues or policies affecting low-income neighborhoods in Brooklyn.
  • Implementing a dedicated intake system for receiving and accurately tracking allegations of housing discrimination, assisting individuals in filing complaints, and coordinating a referral mechanism for fair housing enforcement.
  • Other miscellaneous duties, including grant reporting, data tracking, and participating in community meetings

Qualifications include:

  • Demonstrated passion and commitment to civil rights and the public interest
  • B.A. or B.S. required; Graduate Degree in any relevant field (including J.D.) a plus
  • Experience in community organizing and outreach, advocacy and/or policy work
  • Demonstrated abilities to work with diverse community organizations and other relevant stakeholders
  • Excellent public speaking and writing skills, with the ability to translate legal concepts into understandable and clear language
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; experience with print and social media outreach a plus
  • Highly motivated, team-oriented, efficient, and creative; capable of working independently or closely with the group in a busy environment, managing a diverse and high workload and ability to adapt to quick or changing deadlines
  • Organized and attentive to detail. Computer proficient in order to compile reports and records from activities, track data, and perform other relevant intake or administrative responsibilities.
  • Ability to work flexible hours (evenings or weekends) as the need arises given the community-based nature of the job
  • Spanish language skills a plus

Context: Builds grassroots power, by leading the implementation of organizing campaigns that will increase the number of people involved, leaders trained, and engagement of people with influence to achieve our conservation goals  Plans, organizes and coordinates the activities of staff and volunteers in carrying out the organizing activities for Beyond Coal Campaign. Develops organizing strategies and priorities for Beyond Coal Campaign.

Scope: The Organizing Representative is responsible for recruiting, engaging, and motivating large numbers of new people to take repeated action which will further Sierra Club’s targeted campaign or program goals. Identifies and develops volunteers to take on the role of team leaders and build grassroots power and networks. Identifies and builds alliances with other organizations which can influence decision-makers.

The Organizing Representative is responsible for the coordination and effective implementation of the organizing goals within the assigned campaign or program. Oversees creating the organizing plan and developing the strategy and helps to carry out organizational and issue visibility in regional, national media and in the local community.  Participates in activities and services provided by the regional office. Provides leadership in working with volunteer leaders, national, state and local conservation staff on conservation.  Evaluates and measures success of activities with manager and campaign or program leads to ensure progress towards the campaign or program’s mission and goals. Helps determine changes to strategies needed to reach goals.

Job Activities:

  1. Develops organizing strategy, marshals resources, organizes staff and volunteer efforts monitors and tracks expenses on select campaigns.
  2. Coordinates actions and ensures the effective implementation of the organizing plan to identify, recruit volunteers both in Sierra Club and other groups around campaign or program. Seeks opportunities to advance the Sierra Club’s diversity initiatives through new partnerships and engagement strategies where appropriate.
    • Engages people and develops volunteer leadership in both social and environmental advocacy activities that will create strong environmental communities and build power at the community, state, and national level.
    • Develops and implements a variety of engagement strategies including on-line and face-to-face social networks to support Sierra Club cause.
    • Maintains and develops new partnerships with affinity groups who share many common goals and values.
  3. Plans and coordinates strategy and activities to obtain media coverage in regional and national media outlets.  Participates in the development of media campaigns; may represent the Sierra Club in the media; promotes volunteer media exposure.
  4. Develops grasstop networks and cultivates relationships with public officials. Lobbies Members of Congress and other public officials on behalf of the Club on national and regional conservation priorities.  Develops relationships with Congressional Members and staff within region.
  5. Ensures information, research, and other assistance to Sierra Club leaders, the public and others about the campaigns and priority issues are provided.  Provides support to other internal departments for campaign synergy:
    • Communications Department in the implementation of media and public outreach communications.
    • Advancement Department in the development of effective relationships with donors and foundations within or with an interest in the assigned communities and may assist with the development of organizing objectives and strategies as part of grant projects and proposals.
    • National Political Program to advance the Club’s conservation priorities through relationships with elected officials and via electoral campaigns. Coordinates political organizing in Congressional and other electoral campaigns
  6. Represents Sierra Club in regional coalitions, at regional events and to the general public.
  7. Represents the Sierra Club to the media, public forums and venues, public education and media strategy.
  8. Identifies and develops volunteers who will take work as part of a team and take on the role of team leaders to build our grassroots power and networks.  Helps those leaders succeed by training and coaching them how to strategize, organize, inspire and motivate.
  9. Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • B.A./B.S. degree in Environmental Studies, Political Science or a closely related field.
  • At least 3 years experience in grassroots organizing, training, and motivating volunteers, coalition building and lobbying.
  • Strong demonstrated written and oral communication skills.  Demonstrated public speaking ability.
  • Excellent knowledge and background in a specific issue area of the environmental field related to assigned programs and campaigns.
  • Prior experience and knowledge of either the legislative process or administrative process.
  • Demonstrated ability and effectiveness working with volunteers.
  • Extensive travel required.

This position is represented by a collective bargaining unit and is subject to the terms and conditions of the contract between Sierra Club and John Muir Local.

NY Energy Democracy Alliance Seeks Statewide Coordinator

The New York Energy Democracy Alliance is a collaboration of community-based organizations, grassroots groups, and policy experts working together to move New York State toward a renewable, equitable, accountable and local energy system. As New York grapples with its energy vision, the Energy Democracy Alliance has worked to open up opportunities for grassroots and community-based organizations to participate in the decision-making process, push for a more-equitable distribution of the state’s energy resources, and gain control over our energy future. The Alliance has also worked to constrain the power of utility companies, predatory financial institutions, and exploitative market actors within the energy system.

The Alliance has 17 member organizations who work together to carry out our collective goals. We are organized into several issue-oriented task-forces and infrastructure-oriented committees. Our Steering Committee is responsible for keeping the work aligned with our mission and principles and for making decisions around organizational development.

We seek an experienced candidate to fulfill the responsibilities of Statewide Coordinator for the Alliance. We are open to proposals from people living anywhere in New York State. This is a 6-month contract position.

 

Position Description, Qualifications and Responsibilities

The Coordinator position is a new role for the NY Energy Democracy Alliance. As such, a final set of contracted tasks and deliverables will be negotiated between the successful candidate and the NYEDA Steering Committee, based on the strengths and experience of the individual chosen and the needs of the Alliance. The Coordinator will report on the performance of all contract responsibilities and deliverables to the Steering Committee and will also be accountable to the Alliance membership as a whole. Ability to travel frequently throughout New York State is a must.

The Coordinator must have excellent written and oral communication skills, must be well-organized and able to self-manage. Basic facility with email, word processing, and spreadsheets is a requirement. The Coordinator must demonstrate an ability to collaborate with others and to inspire positive working relationships.

Additionally, we seek proposals from candidates with demonstrated experience in movement-building, community organizing, coalition-building, and/or organizational development. Candidates with a strong policy background, experience in regulatory/legislative campaigns, fundraising/grant-writing experience, or an understanding of how to build grassroots power will be strongly considered. We are not looking for someone with all of these experiences and qualifications, but we are looking for a Coordinator with strong skills and experience in some of these arenas.

Preference will be given to candidates that have experience and competence with the issues of economic and racial justice, either through organizing or life experience.

Basic responsibilities of this contracted position will include:

  • Coordination of all Alliance activities to keep the work running smoothly
  • Strategy development and organizing to carry out the goals of the Alliance
  • Frequent communication with all member organizations to keep all in the loop
  • Development of task management and communications systems to be used by committees, task-forces, and the membership as a whole
  • New member outreach and recruitment
  • Documentation and communication of Alliance activities
  • Facilitation of Alliance meetings and phone calls
  • PR and Communications through press releases, social media, website, email lists and other tools
  • Logistics and organizing for Alliance in-person meetings
  • Assistance with fundraising and grant-writing

Open House New York Seeks Temporary Volunteer Coordinator

Open House New York seeks a Volunteer Coordinator for the 2016 Open House New York Weekend, a two-day festival held annually each October that opens up hundreds of buildings and sites across the five boroughs for tours and talks. One of the largest celebrations of architecture and design in the country, OHNY Weekend is a major citywide event that draws more than 80,000 visitors. The 14th Annual OHNY Weekend will be held on October 15-16, 2016.

OHNY Weekend is made possible through the generous efforts of more than one thousand volunteers, who donate their time and energy to staff participating sites, help coordinate lines, and answer questions. OHNY seeks a full-time, temporary Volunteer Coordinator who will be responsible for oversight and management of the volunteer corps. This is an extremely rewarding position that involves a lot of one-on-one contact with a diverse group of New Yorkers, while making a major contribution to the success of one of New York’s most celebrated cultural events.

Duties and responsibilities include:

• Manage online volunteer registration
• Post volunteer recruitment information on various websites
• Update social media sites about volunteer opportunities for OHNY Weekend
• Represent OHNY at volunteer fairs throughout the city on weekdays and/or weekends
• Assign volunteers to sites and programs

ioby Seeks Events Manager

ioby seeks an Events Manager, preferably based in New York City, Memphis, Cleveland, Detroit, DC or Pittsburgh. The Events Manager will play a critical role in shifting ioby’s model from an online platform and support service to a peer network of neighborhood leaders. Reporting to the Communications & Creative Strategy Director, this team member will work to develop a series of in-person and web-based convenings of neighborhood leaders and broaden ioby’s constituent base of civically engaged residents.

Responsibilities will include planning and implementing several programmatic events a year, as well as developing strategies to best leverage the work to bring ioby to the next level of citizen engagement. The Events Manager will also contribute 20% of their activities to planning ioby’s fundraising events. JOB ACTIVITIES:

80% of work will be devoted to constituent convenings and local leader cultivation events. 20% of work will be devoted to fundraising events.

  • Work with local ioby City Action Strategists and the Communications & Creative Strategy Director to develop strategies to grow ioby’s national constituency through events;
  • Work with on-the-ground staff to plan and implement local convenings in Detroit, Memphis, Cleveland, NYC, Pittsburgh and Washington, DC;
  • Help develop event program content including trainings, skill-sharing, panel discussions, moderated conversations, and others;
  • Interface directly with ioby’s national network of community leaders and partners to plan and prepare for events;
  • Work with the Communications team to design and produce promotional and takeaway collateral; manage the bulk of online and offline outreach for events;
  • Recruit, manage, and develop relationships with local event sponsors and vendors;
  • Manage In-person and on-site events including troubleshooting;
  • Support Growth team’s fundraising-related events, including the annual benefit and small donor-cultivation events.

REQUIREMENTS

Candidates for this position must have:

  • Deep commitment and fulfillment derived from working on a team;
  • Meticulous by nature; excellent communication and time-management skills;
  • Experience securing corporate sponsors for events;
  • Experience marketing events for a variety of audiences and at a variety of ticket prices;
  • Extreme comfort in cold calling; polite persistence;
  • Experience managing a number of vendors, freelancers, and contractors at once;
  • Demonstrated project management and budgeting experience;
  • Basic graphic design skills;
  • Respect and tact when working with new communities, ability to adapt and respond to context;
  • Ability to customize events based on specific goals and outcomes;

Exceptional candidates will also have:

  • Experience managing production of events remotely;

This position requires a large amount of travel. ioby’s regular business hours are 9-6pm Monday through Friday, but this job will require occasional work outside regular business hours. ioby is a startup: You’ll be expected to bring new ideas, strategies, revise your work on short timelines and bring an attitude of continuous improvement and a culture of innovation.

This full-time position has been funded for one year, and will be evaluated for renewal with the staff member. It is salaried, commensurate with experience, and includes a generous benefit package.
