December 15, 2016 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Sanctuary City?
Asylees, Refugees, and Migrants in NYC
Thursday, December 15th, 6:30-8 PM
Elebash Recital Hall

New York has long been America’s premier “city of immigrants.” But it has also been a safe haven for untold numbers of refugees, asylees, and at-risk migrants. This panel will explore that history, and discuss the potential threats and challenges of a new federal administration.

Mae Ngai (Columbia) will provide an overview of modern U.S. immigration law. Francisco Goldman of The New Yorker will discuss the politics of sanctuary. Camille Mackler, Director of Legal Initiatives, New York Immigration Coalition, and Heather Axford, Central American Legal Assistance, will report on sanctuary activists. Nisha Agarwal, Commissioner, Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs, will provide an administration assessment of the current state of affairs. Julia Preston of the New York Times will moderate.

Co-sponsored by Gotham Center, The New York Immigration Coalition, Safe Passage Project, Immigration Equality, Lutheran Social Services, Queens Legal Services, UnLocal, Inc., and CUNY Citizenship Now!
