PSC Film Series: Labor Goes to the Movies: Nightcrawler

April 13, 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Labor Goes to the Movies: Nightcrawler—Fri., Apr. 13
The union’s film series will present Nightcrawler staring Jake Gyllenhall this Friday, April 13 in the PSC Union Hall, 61 Broadway, 16th floor. Seen as an effort to expose the cynicism of lurid tele-journalism, the film actually literalizes the tropes of labor under the regime of neo-liberalism. An ambitious Gyllenhall, seeking a calling for his considerable (and amoral) talents, demonstrates all the entrepreneurial daring the modern economy rewards, learning his “trade” online and applying his internet-acquired business expertise with brilliant if startling panache. At once naïve and manipulative, Gyllenhall embraces the idea that all human relations are defined by the cash nexus. Doors open at 6:00 PM. Four dollar suggested donation. Space is limited! Light refreshments available. Learn more.
Speaker:
Jonathan Buchsbaum, former PSC chapter chair of Queens College, teaches in the Media Studies department at Queens College and writes on political filmmaking and the political economy of national film industries. His latest book is Exception Taken: How France Has Defied Hollywood’s New World Order (Columbia University Press, 2017).
