Learning Democracy: A Discussion on Participatory Economics and Higher Education

November 11, 2015 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Participatory Budgeting (PB) is a system by which people in a community can choose how to spend a portion of the public budget. It has revolutionized the nature of democracy in many of the cities where it has been implemented, and has given the once-voiceless an active say in deciding where public money is spent. We believe that Participatory Budgeting could have a similar effect within higher education – it wouldn’t simply give students a voice – it would give them direct power over the way that schools spend their money.

This event will feature Josh Lerner, the director of the Participatory Budgeting Project, Helen Rosenthal, a City Council member who is actively supportive of Participatory Budgeting, and Fred Freundlich, who is a faculty member at the world’s largest democratically run college, Mondragon University. Please join us to learn more about the ways in which students can reclaim some of their power.
