“Black Lives Matter”

Speaker:
Dr. Brittney Cooper, is an Assistant Professor of Women’s and Gender Studies and Africana Studies at Rutgers University. A scholar of Black women’s intellectual his- tory, Black feminist thought, and race and gender in popular culture, Dr. Cooper writes extensively about both historic and contemporary iterations of Black feminist theorizing. Dr. Cooper is currently completing her first book, Race Women: Gender and the Making of a Black Public Intellectual Tradition, 1892-Present. She is the co- founder of the Crunk Feminist Collective which was named a top feminist blog and is a regular columnist for Salon. Dr. Cooper is a featured commentator on The Melissa Harris-Perry Show, All In With Chris Hayes, and Al Jazeera America and has published in The New York Times, New York Magazine and The Root.com.

Dr. Nancy Mercado
Dr. Nancy Mercado, is a poet, writer, educator, and activist. She is the au- thor of It Concerns the Madness and editor of the children’s anthology if the world were mine. Mercado’s work has been featured in many literary journals and included in dozens of anthologies, including Looking Out Looking In: Anthology of Latino Poetry, Breaking Ground: Anthology of Puerto Rican Women Writers in New York 1980-2012, Poetry After 911 An Anthology of New York Poets, From Totems to Hip-Hop: A Multicultural Anthology of Po- etry Across the Americas 1900-2002, Bum Rush the Page: A Def Poetry Jam, Identity Lessons: Contemporary Writing About Learning to be American, and ALOUD: Voices from the Nuyorican Poets Café.
