Beyond Bernie: How can social movements create a political revolution?

April 9, 2016 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

The Bernie Sanders campaign has taken the country by surprise, revealing intense enthusiasm, especially among young people, for a rupture with normal US politics. But that shouldn’t be much of a surprise: over the last few years, young people have been at the forefront of mass mobilizations around racism, immigration, economic injustice, and the climate crisis. Because of us, public attitudes are shifting around these issues.

By insisting on the necessity for a “political revolution,” the Sanders campaign pays tribute to and builds upon the work done by these movements — and also raises questions about what a revolutionary politics might look like with or without him. How can we best hope to get those in power to enact our agenda? How can we directly obtain political power? What lessons can we draw from past movements and those elsewhere in the world about electoral insurgency? What is the role of the organizations forming out of these inspiring movements, which are building their bases, executing campaigns, and shaping elections?

The need to discuss these questions and strategize for the future is pressing. Please join us at Mayday Space in Bushwick to dive in together. We will hear from movement leaders, dig into deeper conversation together, and offer a chance to sign up to continuing strategizing afterward.
