Banana Kelly Community Improvement Association Seeks Community Organizer (South Bronx, NYC)

Organization Mission:

Banana Kelly Community Improvement Association, Inc. is a community development corporation located in the Hunts Point-Longwood section of the South Bronx. Our mission is to contribute to a revitalized, safe and economically vibrant South Bronx through the development and management of affordable housing and provision of targeted human services. Banana Kelly seeks to empower residents through supportive services, vocational, educational, and cultural programs, and community organizing which assists in the retention of affordable housing accommodations and improvement of the quality of life for all residents.

Job Objective:

The Community Organizer will support the organizing department in their mission to increase resident engagement in order to preserve and expand affordable housing in the South Bronx. The Community Organizer will coordinate our new Healthy Initiative program that involves engaging Banana Kelly residents and the surrounding community on increasing access to healthy foods and activities.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Organize residents in target areas to promote and expand access to healthy foods and activities
  • Support overall organizing department goals which include but are not limited to:
    • Expanding representation of residents in the Resident Council
    • Expanding representation of residents in the Kelly St Block association
    • Preserving and expanding low income housing through city-wide actions
    • Supporting Banana Kelly mission through coordination with other departments
  • Participate in base building including but not limited to:
    • Door knocking
    • Surveying
    • Distributing fliers
    • Conducting one-on-ones
    • Phone banking

Qualifications:

  • Ability to work in diverse communities with people from various backgrounds
  • Spanish/English bilingual preferred
  • Highly motivated individual with a passion for engaging communities
  • Ability to work some nights and weekends
  • 1-3 years applicable work experience
  • Strong relational skills and ability to connect, engage, and inspire community members
  • Strong and effective communicator
