Training and Organizational Development Associate – The Worker Institute

Position is located in New York, NY, within the ILR School located at 570 Lexington Ave, working remotely until location reopens.

The School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University has an immediate opening for an Extension Associate – Training and Organizational Development Associate within the Worker Institute of the Extension/Outreach Division of the School of Industrial and Labor Relations (ILR) is responsible for extension programming and administration within one or more thematic areas. The Extension Associate is responsible for developing and delivering programs and services that are closely aligned with the strategic mission and core values of the ILR School, and for monitoring quality, impact, and outcomes of education, training, technical assistance, consulting, and research activities of the program. This position reports to the Worker Institute Executive Director.

Extension Associate is a full-time, academic, non-tenure track, term position, with an initial contract of one year. The position may be reappointed on the basis of available funding and work with recommendations by the appropriate Executive Director, Academic Director and Associate Dean.

Project Related Emphasis:
This position is responsible for managing the design and development of curriculum and programs for worker centers and other labor organizations. These programs will focus on developing replicable training models on key subjects essential to workers’ rights and important workforce development. This would include work with domestic workers – nannies/housecleaners; restaurant workers, day laborers and nail salon workers, linked to industry standards change. This position lies at the nexus of intersectional inequalities and sectors of low-wage workforce excluded from traditional labor protections. Key values in program development and design include: equity, intersectional/ trauma-informed language; organizational representation of “worker voice” and participatory models of adult education, virtually and in person. Responsibilities include: design and development of curriculum, design and implementation of pedagogical models, coordination of coalitions, coaching and mentoring trainers, supporting worker center capacity to implement training, and liaising with stakeholders to ensure integration of the models within key campaigns and coalitions, contribute to writing articles and reports, and contribute to financial integrity of programs through external funding sources.

Required Qualifications:
Master’s Degree in social work, public health, education, labor studies, or a related field

Minimum three to five years of experience in community or labor, trauma-framed public health models, adult educational program vision, curriculum design, implementation and program evaluation

Track record in bilingual online, interactive training using social media low tech platforms (What’s App)

Demonstrated track record in adult learning and commitment to language justice

Demonstrated track record in NY state and or national coalition work with BIPOC and low wage workers

Experience and desire to work within an action-oriented research setting

Strong skills in organizing, coalition building, conflict resolution, worker center education, theories of adult learning, participatory curriculum design, written communication, report writing, train the trainer models both virtually and in person
Comfort and flexibility with working on several projects simultaneously and supervising student interns at undergraduate and graduate levels

Familiarity with labor unions, worker organizations, and coalition building

Social Justice: a strong commitment to racial, economic, social and justice

Ability to work independently and collectively within a team, and strong interpersonal communication skills

Some evening and weekend work as well as travel is required.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience contributing to financial integrity of programs through seeking/securing external funding sources – contracts, grants, etc.

Minimum of one to three years demonstrated experience in project management (coordination among stakeholders, staff, contractors; managing budgets and logistics, etc.)

Demonstrated writing ability in the thematic content area
