Make the Road New York (MRNY) builds the power of Latinx and immigrant communities to achieve dignity and justice through organizing, policy innovation, transformative education, and survival services.
MRNY is seeking a Youth Organizer (part time, 20hrs/week) to join the Youth Power Project (YPP) to build and support a base of youth leaders in Queens. The Youth Organizer will also engage young people in leadership development and organizing around immigration and other youth issues at the local, State and Federal level. The position would be ideal for a young, energetic organizer with a commitment to social justice, community organizing and civic engagement.
The candidate will work within YPP to build a base, nurture the leadership of our members and advance statewide and federal campaigns around education equity for undocumented students and immigration reform. Additionally, the candidate will represent Make the Road New York at coalitions that discuss immigration reform and education equity strategies.
Youth Organizer responsibilities:
Basebuilding:
● Conduct regular outreach through classroom presentations, phone calls, social media and in the neighborhood
● Build a base of immigrant and youth of color in Queens as grassroots leaders
● Coordinate with youth leaders for planning and executing base-building events and actions
● Maintain regular contact with new and current
Leadership Development:
● Create leadership development and political education workshops and trainings for youth leaders
● Develop youth leaders facilitation skills to lead meetings, workshops and actions
● Support youth members to help lead base-building, campaign and coalition work
Campaigns:
● Coordinate and engage in campaigns that advocate for education equity for undocumented students and elevate the voices/experiences of young people in our federal campaign to pass immigration reform
● Create and implement campaign strategies and connect youth to leading the work
● Engage multiple stakeholders including youth leaders, educators, elected officials, and organizational leaders in the social justice/immigration field
Other Responsibilities:
● Participate in membership meetings, staff meetings, and community building events
● Work with MRNY’s YPP team, key member leaders and allies to move forward city, state and federal campaigns
● Support MRNY’s organizational and YPP wide events throughout the year
Qualifications:
The successful candidate must demonstrate a commitment to MRNY’s mission and vision, have some experience working with youth, preferably through organizing; a commitment to social justice and youth leadership; excellent people and relationship building skills; and be open to working some evenings and weekends. The position will be based out of MRNY’s Jackson Heights, Queens’s office. The organizer must be ready to work with and engage young people in Queens’s communities and in schools. Travel will be required to Albany and Washington DC. Ability to speak Spanish is a must.
