PRIMARY FUNCTIONS
AVP is seeking a dedicated and experienced individual to coordinate a multi-year project to strengthen and amplify the LGBTQ anti-violence movement’s voice and ability to influence policy and legislation on a local, state, and national level. With hate violence and efforts to implement anti-LGBTQ laws and policies on the rise, the National Policy Coordinator will work with NCAVP organizational members to proactively respond to threats to LGBTQ safety and justice in key states, and build a national, coordinated response.
National travel required.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Policy Campaign Development/ Project Management
Responsible for developing and coordinating policy advocacy project for NCAVP member programs which will include:
ï Monitoring and tracking proposed legislative and policy efforts at the local, state, and federal level that will impact LGBTQ safety and justice;
ï Assessing the needs of coalition members organizations with regard to increasing their capacity to participate in and/or lead advocacy efforts;
ï Helping to support a cohort of member organizations to participate in the project;
ï Providing technical assistance and support through trainings, webinars and resource materials to help groups develop policy priorities and carry out campaigns;
ï Documenting campaign plans and developments and disseminating information about policies, strategies and outcomes;
ï Tracking and managing multi-year project budget and goals.
Coalition Coordination
ï Helping coordinate NCAVP meetings and gatherings, including regular committee meetings and NCAVP’s annual in person membership meeting and conference calls.
ï Working closely with staff and coalition members to ensure the coalition’s work is operationalized and deliverables are achieved.
ï Participating in various national policy coalitions on anti-violence issues and national legislative issues impacting LGBTQ communities;
ï Communicating federal policy updates to relevant coalition member organizations and supporting their participation in federal policy advocacy.
QUALIFICATIONS
ï Demonstrated experience developing and leading organizing, policy advocacy, and educational campaigns with multiple stakeholders (National experience preferred).
ï Demonstrated experience and expertise in providing comprehensive and ongoing remote and in person training and technical assistance and capacity building activities.
ï Demonstrated experience with multi-year project development and management, with project evaluation experience preferred.
ï Demonstrated commitment to working to end violence within and against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and HIV-affected communities using an anti-oppression framework.
ï Experience facilitating difficult conversations with multiple parties needed.
ï Knowledge of broad range of LGBTQ hate violence, intimate partner violence, and sexual violence issues.
ï Knowledge of federal and state legislative and administrative policy processes preferred.
ï 2-3 years policy research and advocacy at either the local state or national level required.
ï 2-3 years coalition coordination or participation experience.
ï 2-3 years organizing and leadership development experience required.
ï 2-3 years curriculum development and/or training experience preferred.
ï Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
