The Center for Court Innovation is a non-profit organization that promotes new thinking about how to reduce crime and incarceration while strengthening public trust in justice. The Center creates operating projects, including the award-winning Red Hook Community Justice Center and Midtown Community Court, that have been documented to improve public safety and reduce the use of jail and prison. Nationally and internationally, the Center performs original research on topics of justice reform and provides consulting services to criminal justice innovators.
The Center is current seeking a Project Director for a new community program supporting the Mayor’s Action Plan for Neighborhood Safety (MAP). Underway since 2015 and led by the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice(MOCJ), MAP is a comprehensive strategy to enhance public safety and strengthen community well- being in 15 public housing developments across New York City.
A primary component of the program, Neighborhood Stat(NSTAT), aims to enhance safety by strengthening collaboration and capacity among community residents. Since 2016, borough-wide NSTAT meetings have been convened to 1) share information and data regarding community assets, demographics, health and safety conditions and crime and disorder trends; 2) facilitate community engagement to identify neighborhood priorities and develop initiatives geared towards enhancing quality of life and 3) spur collaboration and accountability among city agencies and other stakeholders to implement community safety improvements and priorities.
In a new phase of the effort, the Center will now work to localize the NSTAT process by assisting each of the 15 designated community to regularly convene local stakeholder groups to discuss identify and prioritize community initiatives, access and analyze data, identify and leverage resources, monitor community conditions, and implement projects that address local concerns and enhance public safety and well-being.
Reporting to the Director of Community Health and Safety Strategies, the Project Director will oversee and manage all aspects of the new project including comprehensive collaboration with John Jay and MOCJ; hiring and training of staff; development of policy, procedures and program materials; coordination with community justice project locations and staff; management of contracting and fiscal reporting; and representation of the Center at myriad local and citywide events, meetings, panels and community forums.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Working closely with key Center staff and with the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice and John Jay College, develop, manage and advance all project tasks, and timelines;
- Direct, support and lead a diverse team of administrative, programming and operational staff;
- Liaise regularly with the Mayor’s Office and John Jay College’s Research and Evaluation Center regarding program implementation and to provide regular and timely project updates;
- Collaborate closely with all relevant Center site directors and staff to plan and implement programming and objectives;
- Ensure each Center project site has the necessary information, resources and support for initiative operations in community locations and for ongoing data collection, reporting, and evaluation activities;
- Convene internal operational meetings to coordinate planning, implementation, resource sharing and field operations management across Center sites and departments;
- Liaise regularly with multiple City agencies to leverage resources and acquire the necessary support for local initiatives;
- Ensure that local program activities are comprehensive, high quality and meet or exceed all expectations while adhering to city agency requirements and/or regulations;
- Collaborate closely with the Center’s Research and Technology Departments and John Jay College to facilitate data collection, analysis and the evaluation process;
- Coordinate with the Center’s Training Institute and HR Department to ensure all staff receive comprehensive training and support;
- Coordinate with the Center’s Communication Department and other MAP partners to develop and distribute high-quality multimedia products, program descriptions, announcements, progress reports, power point overviews for various audiences, partners and stakeholders; and materials;
- Serve as the Center’s primary representative at all borough-wide NSTAT meetings;
- Prepare and deliver presentations and progress reports for the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice, John Jay and other key stakeholders.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate must have a Bachelor’s Degree or above and a minimum of 5 years of successful experience in project management, supervision and leadership roles. The ideal candidate will be passionate, skilled and experienced in working with communities to promote health and safety. Other non-negotiable requirements include:
- Successful personnel management experience;
- Superior project and time management skills;
- Strong ability to manage and implement multiple project components simultaneously;
- Exceptional analytical, communication, presentation and writing skills;
- Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse, multi-disciplinary team
- Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain strong relationships with governmental and community agencies, non-profit organizations and community groups;
- Experience working with city governmental entities on public safety projects;
- Demonstrated capacity to identify and achieve project goals, quickly, effectively and successfully in a fast paced, high pressure environment;
- Availability on some weekends and evenings as needed;
Position Type: Full-time
Compensation: Salary range starts at 85K, Competitive salary commensurate with experience, and excellent benefits package.
Location: Position is based at the Center’s main office but candidate must routinely and frequently travel to all 15 designated sites and a range of other locations in and around the city.
