The NY NJ Regional Joint Board of Workers United is dedicated to winning economic and racial justice through innovative and dynamic worker-led organizing campaigns.
We are a diverse and participatory union that centers our members’ needs for justice at work and in their communities. We build their collective power to win dignity, good contracts, safe working conditions, and laws that benefit working families. We are committed to uplifting all working people in the New York -New Jersey region.
Our current focus is building worker leadership among the mostly immigrant women employed in New York’s nail salon industry. This growing campaign is centered around building the power of working class immigrant women of color. We are building the first-ever nail salon worker union in the United States, changing the landscape of what’s possible to win power.
The nail salon industry is notable for it’s huge diversity of languages and ethnicities. We are seeking an experienced bilingual (Spanish/English) individual to join our team as the Language Justice Coordinator to help build an inclusive, multilingual membership. Reporting to the Campaign Coordinator, the LJ Coordinator will form part of a cross-departmental team, providing coordination, administrative and program support for the organization’s language justice activities. As needed, the LJ Coordinator will provide translation of written materials and interpretation for training, staff meetings and team building activities and public events. The LJ Coordinator will help facilitate communication for members and staff, enabling the full participation of our staff and members across languages.
Responsibilities include but not limited to the following:
- Develop vision and strategy for language justice as we organize with our current membership (majority Spanish-speaking) and build a multilingual membership – organizing with Mandarin and other language speakers, including indigenous languages
- Provide Spanish-language interpretation and translation as needed, and ensure access to low-literacy members
- Coordinate interpretation and translation needs within the organization, and build, support and maintain relationships with consultant interpreters and translators
- Support worker leaders with language access, and in co-creating a linguistically inclusive membership
- Coordinate program planning and lead activities

- Lead trainings on interpretation and language justice with staff
- Other duties as assigned
