Background

The Frick Collection is an art museum with a collection of more than 1,500 works of art—dating from the thirteenth to the nineteenth century—displayed in the intimate surroundings of the former home of Henry Clay Frick. The residence, with its furnishings and works of art, has been open to the public since 1935. The Frick Art Reference Library is an internationally recognized research library that serves as one of the world’s leading resources for the study of Western art. The Frick Collection will reopen to the public in early 2021 in the Marcel Breuer–designed building at 945 Madison Avenue, formerly home to the Whitney Museum of American Art and most recently The Met Breuer. The temporary location, called Frick Madison, will house the Frick’s collections, programs, and staff during the renovation and expansion of its historic buildings at 1 East 70th Street.

Internship

The Education Department of The Frick Collection is now accepting applications from undergraduate students for the Ayesha Bulchandani Internship Program for summer 2021. Due to the ongoing public health crisis, this internship may be conducted using a fully remote or blended work model. Opportunities for onsite work will be offered only if it is safe to do so based on local circumstances. Your application will not be adversely affected if you are unable to travel to New York or complete onsite work. Interns will need access to high speed internet and a computer. The museum can lend laptops for the duration of the internship to those who do not have access to a computer.

Education at the Frick facilitates a vital and probing dialogue between The Frick Collection and the public through a commitment to excellence in object-based teaching. Our programs seek to welcome everyone by removing barriers to engagement, in fulfillment of Henry Clay Frick’s wish for a museum “to which the entire public shall forever have access.” This internship provides a superb opportunity for participating in many aspects of museum education work in a small, dynamic department.

Together with the Frick’s experienced Education staff, interns participate in the planning and implementation of public programs, including authoring and presenting a public gallery talk. Additionally, interns participate in a wide range of enrichment sessions, including introductions to the permanent collection and the resources of the Frick Art Reference Library, opportunities to interact with staff from across the institution, and a weekly reading group on topics in the field of museum education.

Eligibility

The Ayesha Bulchandani Internship is open to undergraduate students and members of the class of 2020. Preference will be given to applicants with a demonstrated interest in art history, museum education, and related studies. Foreign nationals must be eligible to participate in internship placements in the U.S and receive a stipend.

Time Commitment

The internship spans nine weeks, from mid-June to mid-August, with activities typically carried out four days per week. Please note that Education interns may be needed on selected weekday evenings and weekends to assist with public programs.

Stipend

In addition to the other benefits associated with an internship at The Frick Collection, a stipend of $5,000 is available for Education interns under the Ayesha Bulchandani Internship Program for Undergraduate Students. Although all undergraduate applicants are eligible for the Ayesha Bulchandani Internship Program, preference will be given to applicants who receive need-based financial aid from their college or university or submit a brief statement indicating financial need.

Benefit of an Internship with The Frick Collection

The Frick Collection offers excellent opportunities to appreciate some of the world’s finest works of art. All interns of The Frick Collection may access free or discounted admission to most of New York’s museums. Summer interns will attend a wide range of staff-led enrichment sessions, such as close looks at the permanent collection, introductions to the resources of the Frick Art Reference Library, and career discussions with staff across the institution. The Frick also provides employees, trainees, interns, and volunteers with a discount on Museum Shop purchases.

Application Process and Timeline

Please note that applications to multiple departments at The Frick Collection are not accepted; please apply for only one internship.

Applications for the Summer 2021 Ayesha Bulchandani Undergraduate Education Internship will be accepted through March 31, 2021. Selected candidates will be contacted in April for interviews, to be conducted via Zoom. All applicants will be notified of their application status by May 15, 2021.

• A cover letter that includes the following:
  • Your reasons for applying to the Frick’s Education Department, including a statement describing how an internship would enhance your academic course of study and career preparations
  • Your preferred dates and hours of availability (to be discussed if selected for an interview)
  • The names, professional affiliations, telephone numbers, and email addresses of two references, at least one of which must be academic
• A résumé
• If applicable, a copy of your financial aid award letter from your college or university for the current academic year and/or a written statement if your circumstances require further explanation. Written statements should not exceed 250 words.
