New Economy Project seeks an experienced organizer to play a lead role on city- and state-wide campaigns that foreground racial and economic justice, community equity, and just transition. Founded in 1995, New Economy Project has been at the forefront of financial justice advocacy and coalition organizing in NYC and NYS. We wage groundbreaking campaigns and organize effective coalitions to advance cooperative and community-led development, and challenge systemic discrimination that perpetuates poverty, segregation, and inequality.
We seek energetic candidates who are dedicated to racial, social, and climate justice, and who share our vision that another world is possible. A strong candidate will bring significant experience organizing campaigns, preferably in NYC or NYS. The Organizing Director will work directly with New Economy Project’s leadership team, and help supervise campaign and project teams. We seek to fill this new position as soon as possible.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
The Organizing Director’s primary responsibilities will include:
- Developing creative campaign, policy, communications, and research strategies that build power and advance a bold racial and economic justice agenda.
- Coalition-building, including outreach, recruitment, and engagement with community, labor, civil rights, climate justice, and cooperative organizations.
- Working with broad-based coalitions to:
- Win creation of a public bank in NYC, enabling the City to divest from Wall Street banks and invest in NYC communities of color.
- Advance community land trusts to ensure permanently-affordable housing and community-led development.
- Move a statewide community wealth-building agenda rooted in racial and economic justice.
- Collaborating with coalition members to develop dynamic policy advocacy and popular education strategies.
- Supervising team members, developing and conducting effective trainings, and leading organizing and advocacy efforts that further our mission and campaign goals.
- Coordinating presentations for community-based organizations and other constituencies, and representing the organization in public forums, legislative meetings and hearings, and other key spaces.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate will:
- Embrace New Economy Project’s mission and commitment to transformational change, just transition, and social justice movement-building.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the role that racial inequity plays in our society and economy.
- Bring at least seven years of experience, including at least three years in a supervisory or leadership capacity, working on progressive community, labor, electoral, or other campaigns, and have a strong track record of successful coalition work.
- Exhibit excellent interpersonal and communication skills and an ability to work effectively across racial, gender, and other identities.
- Have outstanding writing and communication skills and excellent attention to detail.
We will consider a candidate’s full range of educational, professional, and life experience. We do not require that candidates possess any specific degrees or levels of formal educational attainment.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience, with an expected annual salary range between $75,000 and $90,000. New Economy Project offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes health, dental, and vision insurance, 403(b) plan, flexible spending plan, and generous paid-time off including a 3-month sabbatical after five years.
LOCATION
New Economy Project’s office is located in NYC. Staff members are currently working remotely. This position will be remote until the organization returns safely to the office.
