Tenant Advocate Intern, Summer, Department of Buildings (NYC)

The NYC Department of Buildings is responsible for ensuring the safe and lawful use of buildings and properties by enforcing the NYC Construction Codes, Energy Code and Zoning Resolution. We facilitate compliant development with integrity, efficiency and professionalism. We are committed to becoming a premier municipal building organization, dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for all New Yorkers and making our city safer. We are committed to improving our performance and developing procedures that are streamlined, understandable and transparent.

The Office of the Tenant Advocate (OTA) was established by Local Law 161 of 2017 to assist tenants living in occupied multiple dwellings under construction.   The unit ensures that tenant protection plans are in compliance, investigates complaints of tenant harassment and makes recommendations to Agency policies and procedures to minimize the impact of construction or service disruptions on occupied residents.

Support OTA generally, including responding to tenant complaints, answering tenant hotline, referring complaints for inspections as appropriate; and work on specialized initiatives over the summer to:
• Compile information from DOB systems on buildings as requested;
• Research owner portfolios  where a pattern of questionable work practices and/or deteriorated living conditions have been identified;
• Gather and input information as directed, as it relates to vacate orders and utility shutoffs to improve the Agency’s internal process and external communication.
• Data input as needed.
