Jobs to Move America (JMA) Seeks Southern Director (Birmingham, AL)

Jobs to Move America (JMA) is currently seeking a Southern Director with at least eight years’ experience leading, and managing campaigns and community/worker organizing. The Director will run campaigns to win good jobs, access to training, and community benefits agreements for the Black, Latino and white workers employed at global manufacturers based in Alabama and Mississippi. This position is an excellent opportunity for long-term organizers interested in new models of organizing at the intersection of racial, economic, and environmental justice to transform how global manufacturers receiving public support create good jobs and community benefits. The target starting date is April 1, 2020, or as soon thereafter as possible.

Responsibilities

The Southern Program Director, who will be based in Birmingham, AL and will report to the executive director, will be responsible for the following:

  • Directing a three-person team at a Birmingham, AL office that advances JMA’s mission, in organizing community members and manufacturing workers and developing research and reports.
  • Moving campaign messages effectively across media.
  • Creating systems to manage a growing list of relevant contacts and campaign supporters/adversaries to advance monthly goals for each group.
  • Supervising research staff in the development of reports, fact sheets, white papers, and other campaign materials.
  • Supervising organizing staff in moving workers and community members to fight for Community Benefits Agreements that guarantee access to all workers to good manufacturing jobs, including job training, in Alabama
  • Creating and driving strategy, and managing a comprehensive campaign, in order to win community benefits agreements campaigns with global corporations based in the South.
  • Collaborating with JMA’s other campaign teams to drive policy in market-shaping regions that support southern workers and communities

Qualifications

  • At least 8 years of full-time community and/or labor organizing experience, including at least 2 years of experience in a lead role, supervising organizers and researchers
  • Demonstrated success in managing and developing staff, and community or worker leaders
  • Demonstrated success reaching and maintaining strong support while working on worker or community organizing
  • Experience working on comprehensive corporate campaign plans that include research, organizing, and communications.
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing the interests of people of color, women and/or formerly incarcerated people at America’s workplaces.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a wide array of constituencies including elected officials, agency staff, press, and members of the public.
  • Ability to effectively manage a workload with competing priorities, collaborate as part of a team, and work in a deadline-driven environment.
  • A demonstrated commitment to meeting a high bar and a history of getting things done even in the face of obstacles
  • Has a car and a valid driver’s license

EXTRA CONSIDERATION will be given for candidates who:

  • Identify as persons of color, women, or formerly incarcerated persons and/or have had experience working with more than one of those groups.
  • Have experience working in the labor movement.
  • Are fluent speaking a language other than English.
  • Have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Relevant advanced education beyond a master’s degree will be given credit toward the starting salary

Terms of Employment

The salary range for the position is $72,000-$78,000/ year and is dependent upon experience. JMA offers full family health and dental benefits (at no premium cost to the employee) retirement, generous time off, cell phone reimbursement and work-related mileage reimbursement.
