The Genesee Valley Chapter organizer’s work will include:

• Working closely with Genesee Valley Chapter Director to conduct outreach, base building, training, education and leadership development among NYCLU members and among members of directly impacted communities;
• Be a representative of the NYCLU and an agent for change in the movement to end barriers to civil rights and civil liberties through coalition work, community organizing, public speaking, and by building relationships in key local and statewide strategic areas;
• Participating in the development of local and statewide organizing plans to advance civil rights and civil liberties in coordination with the Genesee Valley Chapter Director.
• Assisting in policy research and fact finding

Roles and Responsibilities:

• Assist in the development and execution of local and statewide advocacy campaigns to advance and defend civil liberties and civil rights;
• Engage in a wide array of tactics, including lobbying, canvassing, tabling, digital organizing, conduct trainings, participating in stakeholder meetings, hosting community forums, in coalitions, and organizing to build grassroots and organizational power on a wide range of civil liberties issues.
• Identify, develop and steward strong relationships with key stakeholders and allies including local and statewide social justice organizations, service providers, educational institutions, organized labor, faith groups, and lawmakers
• Advance our mission, values and racial equity principles and further our local and statewide strategy as developed in collaboration with Chapter and Field Director;
• Issue-spot and identify organizing opportunities in alignment with the vision, mission, and core equity, diversity and inclusion values of NYCLU and local and statewide priorities.
• Train, engage and mobilize a grassroots network of members, supporters and volunteers;
• Organize and conduct public education events, presentations, workshops and panel discussions that further our local and statewide strategic campaign plans;
• Use interdepartmental tools and strategies to achieve campaign success.
• Learn and use community asset mapping and a power analysis that centers and empowers directly impacted people and marginalized communities in local and statewide organizing plans.
• Meaningfully engage in direct lobbying of public officials;
• Develop policy expertise on NYCLU issues and local and statewide political trends;
• Other related duties as assigned.

Experience and Qualifications:

The ideal candidate for this position will have a strong understanding and connections to the NYCLU’s mission and a demonstrated commitment to civil rights; will have grassroots organizing experience, including leadership development and base building; will have experience developing or implementing policy and/or legislative advocacy campaigns in collaboration with directly impacted communities; and will have experience working on racial justice and immigration issues.

Minimum Qualifications Required to Apply for the Position:

• Bachelor’s Degree and one or more years of experience in grassroots or community organizing, advocacy, and/or related fields;
• Demonstrated commitment to civil rights and civil liberties, and understanding of the mission of the NYCLU;
• Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills including active listening and public speaking ability in groups and one-on-one;
• Excellent interpersonal skills and proven ability to effectively interact with diverse populations;
• Ability to think critically and contextually about systemic issues of race, power and identity;
• Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple projects simultaneously;
• Proficiency with MS Office programs;
• Valid U.S. driver’s license and registered vehicle;
• Familiarity with New York State history, government, and communities;
• Ability to regularly travel across eight counties in the Greater Rochester region, as necessary;
• Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
• Experience organizing around police reform, racial justice and immigrants’ rights.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

• Ability to problem solve, negotiate, and compromise in coalition settings;
• Demonstrated ability to maintain high quality interactions with team members and organizational partners;
• Experience developing local campaigns that demonstrate a keen understanding of Genesee Valley region and New York State government, communities and power landscape.
