The Humane League Seeks Field Organizer (NYC)

The Humane League is an international nonprofit ending the abuse of animals raised for food through institutional and individual change. THL fosters a high-energy culture of teamwork and mission-driven problem solving, and we have earned recognition as Top Charity from Animal Charity Evaluators for all of their rating periods. Over the past few years, The Humane League has positioned itself for growth. We have a current staff size of 70+ dispersed across the country and internationally. We are looking for a magnetic individual with a can-do attitude who is ready to mobilize THL’s expanding community of activists in the New York City area.

YOUR OPPORTUNITY

You will work with individuals and groups across multiple states, and inspire volunteers to take on leadership roles for THL’s campaign initiatives. You are a dynamic, values-driven individual who is ready to motivate others, foster long-term relationships, and train activists in effective grassroots animal advocacy and corporate campaigning.

We want you because you are committed to ending the abuse of animals raised for food and are ready to mobilize people to hold corporations accountable—influencing the world’s biggest companies to create and implement animal welfare policies that abolish the worst forms of abuse and reduce the suffering of billions of animals.

You are ideal for this position because you have the ability to be creative and pragmatic, and are able to shift focus on short notice. You are outgoing and charismatic, and your desire to network with people from a variety of backgrounds leads to meaningful connections. You are comfortable talking to people with differing opinions and can maintain a high level of professionalism under pressure. You are excited to build power by developing volunteer leaders to execute campaign tactics across your region and are eager to solicit and provide feedback to constantly improve our effectiveness. You are comfortable speaking to large crowds, and in the media (tv, radio, newspaper, etc.). You possess excellent team-building skills and are driven to overcome obstacles to expand our reach for animals.

This is a full-time, New York City based position that allows you to work remotely from your home. Some travel is required for this position. We are only able to consider applicants who possess United States work authorization.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Proactively identify, recruit, and lead individuals from across your city/region to join THL’s expanding community of supporters. Grow our network and re-energize our existing network.
  • Train, motivate, and retain volunteers to take on leadership roles for THL and to execute a variety of actions and events to further our campaign efforts and overall mission to end the abuse of animals for food.
  • Efficiently manage volunteer tracking tools to keep meticulous records of volunteer activity and progression within THL’s engagement ladder.
  • Develop relationships with media and key stakeholders to constantly expand our reach and impact. Serve as a spokesperson to the press as needed and in accordance with communication department’s guidance.
  • Build rapport with major and potential donors by organizing various fundraising events.
  • Act as the face of THL to individuals and community groups, including speaking at events, in webinars, and on video conference calls.

 

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Mission-aligned:Strong commitment THL’s philosophy and approach, comfort engaging in pressure campaigns, and identifies as vegan or vegetarian. While not required, experience in grassroots advocacy, volunteer management, or the animal rights movement is a plus.
  • Leadership: Ability and enthusiasm to effectively lead, motivate, empower, and engage various target audiences. Because the movement is comprised of people from a wide range of backgrounds, the ability to navigate issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion and bring a deep commitment to advancing these values.
  • Problem-solving: Forward-looking thinker who anticipates needs, actively seeks opportunities and proposes solutions with strong decision-making capability. Must be self-directed and able to plan and coordinate many projects simultaneously,.
  • Communication:Ability to write and speak clearly and effectively, and to interact with all staff, donors, volunteers and the public in a positive, professional and outgoing manner. Experience with public speaking is highly preferred.
  • Teamwork:The successful candidate must be creative and enjoy working within an entrepreneurial environment that is mission-driven, results-driven and community-oriented. The ideal individual is a highly resourceful team-player who works effectively with all levels of staff, with the ability to also be extremely effective independently, and displays dedication to the work and role.
  • Organization: Strong attention to detail and the ability to thrive with minimal direct supervision in a remote workplace with time-sensitive administrative tasks.
  • Technology:Highly proficient in using contemporary office software applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, and the like. Demonstrated ability to learn new software quickly and independently. Experience with any of the following is a plus: EveryAction (or comparable eCRM), Google Drive, Apple Keynote, Slack, Asana, Google sites.
  • Flexibility: Willing to work flexible hours, including occasional weekends, and travel 1-2 times per quarter to volunteer events, trainings, and staff retreats.

Starting salary is $38,000 with added consideration for cost of living.
