Human Services Council of NY, Inc. Seeks Policy Analyst/Organizer (NYC)

HSC seeks a Policy Analyst/Organizer to assist HSC in our campaign efforts to secure critical investments and policy change for human services providers. This position will work heavily with our members to engage them in our work as well as help develop and carry out campaign strategy.

To that end, the position will include the following duties:

  • Under the direction of the Deputy Executive Director, assist the Policy Unit with advocacy initiatives.
  • Engage our membership in advocacy actions.
  • Draft memorandums, letters, and testimony to be used in advocacy campaigns.
  • Organize meetings with key elected and appointed officials.
  • Collect and analyze data from membership to support priorities / goals.
  • Hold special trainings for members in key legislative districts and prepare them to react during key moments.
  • Identify client spokespeople for lobby days and press opportunities
  • Represent the organization at coalition meetings and public policy briefings.
  • Prepare and distribute training and educational materials to our membership on various topics.

Qualifications

  • College degree and three or more years relevant work experience, a graduate degree can substitute for work experience
  • Previous experience in public policy, advocacy, organizing, or social services
  • Knowledge of policy issues in New York City’s human services field as well as a firm understanding of city, state, and federal government and legislative processes is preferred
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative in a fast-paced environment.
  • Dependability and attention to detail
  • Computer literacy a must
  • Graphic design skills are a plus

  • develops and implements sector-wide initiatives and advocacy strategies;
  • promotes the sector’s partnership with government; and
  • acts as the organized voice for the sector, building broad recognition and support for providers and clients from government, the business community, funders, and the public.
