New Immigrant Community Empowerment Seeks Organizing Director (NYC)

SUMMARY OF POSITION

The Organizing Director at NICE will be responsible for leading the implementation of strategic campaigns with member leaders, partners, and allies, to combat unfair labor practices and other issues that impact the lives of immigrant workers. The ideal candidate is a passionate, skilled and creative organizer; a self-starter and great team player who works effectively independently and as part of a team, with a long-term commitment to social and economic justice and to the empowerment of low-income immigrant workers.

New Immigrant Community Empowerment (NICE) is a community-based organization focused on expanding protections and developing the capabilities of some of the most vulnerable workers in New York. NICE works with recent immigrants who are low-wage workers in precarious and unregulated sectors, particularly in the construction, day labor, and cleaning service industries. As recent immigrants, many of NICE’s community members lack information regarding their rights as immigrants and workers, as well as their right to access basic services. Many fall prey to unscrupulous employers and to fringe and predatory services that target new and primarily undocumented immigrants. NICE addresses issues faced by its community members through a variety of strategies, such as community-building, grassroots organizing and advocacy, and direct services – including a worker-run, living-wage job center, that serves as a safer alternative for community members who solicit work at street corners and at fraudulent employment agencies. NICE also provides workforce development training, health and safety certification, assistance to recover unpaid wages, weekly legal clinics, rights-based English literacy classes, and referrals to critical services.
