Make the Road New York Seeks Neighborhood Rezoning Coordinator

Make the Road New York seeks an energetic and committed organizer to help coordinate our neighborhood rezoning work in the North Shore of Staten Island, Bushwick, East New York and Brownsville, Brooklyn. The Coordinator will supervise tenant organizers in both Brooklyn and Staten Island and help the legal staff preserve affordable housing for community members, and to strengthen MRNY’s reach in these areas.

About the Organization: Make the Road New York (www.maketheroadny.org) is a non-profit organization that builds the power of Latino and working class communities to achieve dignity and justice through organizing, policy innovation, transformative education, and survival services. We have over 20,000 members and operate four community centers in Bushwick, Brooklyn; Jackson Heights, Queens; Port Richmond, Staten Island; and Brentwood, Long Island.

The Coordinator will split their time between our office in Brooklyn and our office in Staten Island. They would need to be mobile across Staten Island and Brooklyn, particularly throughout the identified areas for rezoning. Regular trips to Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens for meetings would also be required.

The position will report to our Director of Organizing and will coordinate our multidisciplinary team of organizers, attorneys, and coalition members in implementing a vision for a comprehensive rezoning plan in the North Shore of Staten Island, especially in immigrant and communities of color. The Coordinator will also oversee our anti-displacement work in East New York, Brooklyn. The Coordinator will also represent Make the Road at various city-wide coalition tables and will lead much of our Staten Island media work, as well as assist with fundraising for the initiative. This position will also supervise 2 full-time outreach specialists and one half-time outreach specialist, ensure all grant requirements are met and provide quantitative and qualitative data as needed. The Coordinator will be responsible for base-building as needed to ensure all grant requirements are met.
