Murphy Institute Union Semester Seeks Full-Time Coordinator

The New York Union Semester (NYUS) program is seeking a full-time coordinator (Academic Internship Specialist).

The NYUS is a unique and innovative program which combines academic scholarship with hands–on internships at New York City local unions and worker centers. It welcomes students from around the country for an in-depth, rewarding and unforgettable experience.  Students study with world-class scholars and practitioners in labor at the Joseph S. Murphy Institute for Worker Education and Labor Studies (JSMI), City University of New York (CUNY), earning 12 – 16 credits.

The NYUS coordinator would be engaged in multiple tasks including recruiting students, fostering relationships with local union hosts, meeting with students and mentors, coordinating pre-semester orientations and end-of-term ceremonies and creating social activities for students.

This position is an opportunity for a person passionate about worker’s rights, social justice and the labor movement as it requires networking with an array of unions and community-based organizations many of whom are often on the front lines of social movements.

In addition to academic programs, JSMI’s Labor Center is dedicated to research, public programming, and serving the needs of labor and the broader community. Consequently, staff of the Institute are surrounded by almost daily public forums, events and meetings where dialogue about the issues of the day effecting working class communities and their organizations take place.
