YOU WANT A JOB THAT CHANGES PEOPLE’S LIVES? BECOME A UNION ORGANIZER!
Now more than ever, the American Dream is becoming more difficult to achieve. CEOs are getting richer while more and more working people slip into poverty and debt. The rich get tax cuts, and everyone else is left paying the bills to run and protect our country. To gain real power on the job, working people need to form a union. Many companies deny workers basic and simple things such as a decent living wage, affordable health care or breaks. More and more, workers are standing up to these injustices and demanding a voice in decisions that affect their lives. From auto workers in Alabama and Mississippi, to teachers in Louisiana, to fast food and retail store workers across the country, working people are demanding respect and dignity in their workplaces by organizing a union…and they are WINNING! $15 IS A LIVING WAGE WORKERS’ RIGHTS ARE CIVIL RIGHTS OUR DREAMS CAN’T WAIT AFL-CIO Organizing Institute www.aflcio.org/oi RESPECT AND DIGNITY @WORK
What union organizers do
A union organizer helps working people build power in their workplaces. Organizers work directly with individuals who want a voice at work and in their communities and help them build democratic organizations that can make a difference.
We train and prepare you for the action
The OI training provides an intensive look at the work of a union organizer. The process begins with a three-day training, where candidates learn and practice basic union organizing skills. Housing and meals are provided. Selected applicants participate in a 12-week, paid ($600 per week, minus taxes) field apprenticeship, in which they learn union-building skills and gain experience on a labor union organizing campaign firsthand.
Job placement
Upon successful completion of the AFL-CIO Apprenticeship Program, apprentices are recommended by the Organizing Institute to be hired by local and national unions. Annual starting salaries, depending on the union, range from $35,000 to $50,000 with excellent benefits.
