Nazareth Housing Seeks Paid Intern for Outreach to Faith-Based Organizations (NYC)

Summary of the Position:

Nazareth Housing (NH), a nonprofit provider of low-income housing, emergency shelter and homelessness prevention services, seeks two interns to assist our Resiliency Office. The interns will work directly with the Resiliency Coordinator on a substantive community outreach project aimed at promoting Nazareth Housing’s storm recovery services, expanding the LESReady! neighborhood coalition, and strengthening the resiliency of faith-based organizations and houses of worship in the Lower East Side. This is a great opportunity to build your resume in a respected, social services setting and gain experience in the resiliency and disaster preparedness fields. The Internships are available for the Winter/Spring time frame.  Modest stipend offered to interns.

Summary of the Project:

Nazareth Housing is a founding member of the LESReady! neighborhood coalition, a network of community-based organizations and institutions that cooperatively coordinate response, resources, and preparedness planning around disasters. New York Disaster Interfaith Services (NYDIS) is a faith-based federation of service providers and charitable organizations who work in partnership to provide disaster readiness, response, and recovery services to New York City. This project is a coordinated effort between Nazareth Housing and NYDIS to engage faith-based organizations and houses of worship in the Lower East Side on disaster preparedness, organizational resiliency, and storm recovery.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Confirming the locations and status of all faith-based organizations and houses of worship in the Lower East Side / East Village / Two Bridges neighborhoods of Manhattan;
  • Developing an outreach strategy and mailing campaign to all identified FBOs;
  • Encouraging FBO participation in NYDIS’s House of Worship Communitywide Asset and Logistics Management (HOWCALM®) system, a web-based management tool that identifies and inventories the physical assets, programmatic resources, and skilled volunteers that houses of worship, religious schools, and faith-based service providers can activate and deploy in case of disaster;
  • Promoting Nazareth Housing’s Resiliency workshops and storm recovery services among clergy and congregations;
  • Supporting the expansion of the LESReady! coalition;
  • Following up with FBOs in person as needed;
  • Supporting additional resiliency initiatives as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience with community outreach;
  • Strong attention to detail;
  • Knowledge of internet research sources and mapping tools;
  • Ability to take initiative, multi-task, work quickly & be flexible;
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel & Power Point;
  • Excellent written, oral & interpersonal communications skills;
  • Ability to work on your feet for extended periods of time;
  • Capacity to work independently and as part of a team;
  • Interest in disaster preparedness, climate resiliency, or community organizing a plus;
  • Past experience working with faith-based organizations a plus;
  • Bilingual Spanish or Chinese preferred.

Required Education:

Must be a current Junior, Senior, recent graduate, or current Graduate student with focus on one of the following disciplines: urban affairs and planning, community organizing, disaster preparedness and planning, communications, social services and a desire to apply these skill sets in a nonprofit environment with the goal of impacting social change.

Schedule:

Winter/Spring Internship: January through March*. The schedule will require some tasks to be completed at the office while other tasks – such as FBO location confirmation and canvassing – will entail a considerable amount of time out of doors. Occasional weekend work is anticipated. 16-24 hours weekly with school schedule considered.
